Proposal: System Shock

Withdrawn

In the rule Systems, in the sentence “At any time, an Operator whose Readiness is Workshop may add a System of a desired Condition to their Bot by spending its Effective Cost”, remove “Effective”.

Buying a cheap Engine affects its Output; buying a cheap Chassis affects its durability. There’s no downside to buying a cheap System, and while I’m not opposed to implementing one, many of them have non-damage outputs, making that delicate work. In the interim I think that Systems should be full price by default.

You don’t see System durability as a downside?

It is a downside but not a big one, I think? Tiebreakers come up rarely and if you can avoid it by winning, by having a 1% axe that you couldn’t otherwise afford, then why wouldn’t you.

I do feel like we’re already almost at the point where leading players are barely constrained by money, and cheap weapons feed into that.

My first thought was to make system Consumption scale up with lowered Condition… Maybe that was a better thought, actually.

If two Bots with 100% and 50% Rams respectively are repeatedly colliding, the 50% Ram is going to fall off first, which will be very bad news for that Bot.

Minute to Win It suggests having Bouts last longer so that there’s enough time for that kind of thing to start happening.

Oh, Thundershrike has pointed out on Minute To Win It that getting any system down to zero is a game-winning TKO. That seems a huge downside to a cheap System. (And I’m sure Min-Mox’s “1% Weapons behind 100% Plate” design will soon be arms-raced away by something that can bypass that.)
