Proposal: The Fault in The Fault in Our Stars

Unpopular, 1-4. Josh

Adminned at 16 Jun 2023 08:16:07 UTC

Destroy all Avatars for whom no Activity Report prior to this proposal’s posting has contained all four of the words in their Symbol Name.
Destroy all Avatars whose Symbol Names have appeared in Activity Reports which were marked with a FOR symbol by the Ascendant.

Reword the rule “Mindjacking” to the following:

A Mindjacker may carry out a Mindjacking as an Existential Action. A Mindjacking is the act of making a post in the Story Post Category with the title Mindjacking: (x), where (x) is a flavour-text string of its author’s choice; the contents of the post should be “The stars of (y) will guide me.”, where (y) is a Star Sign. At their earliest opportunity, the Ascendant shall mark this Mindjacking with a FOR symbol if (x) is the Symbol Name of an Avatar with Star Sign (y) whose Home Tier is higher than the author’s Level and whose Occupancy Tier is not; otherwise they shall mark it with an AGAINST symbol.

A Mindjacker whose Mindjacking has been legally marked with a FOR symbol by the Ascendant then Ascends and the Avatar named in the Mindjacking is destroyed. Immediately after Ascending in this way, the Mindjacker’s Suspicion is set to 3.

Once a Mindjacking has been marked with a FOR or AGAINST symbol from the Ascendant according to this rule, it cannot be marked with another symbol.

If, since this Proposal was posted, any Mindjacker (excluding lemon and Bucky) has Ascended as a result of a Mindjacking which named an Avatar whose Symbol Name already appeared in a previous Mindjacking which was marked with a FOR symbol by the Ascendant, revert all such Ascensions, returning that Mindjacker’s game variables to what they were immediately preceding the Ascension.

ever since https://blognomic.com/archive/the_fault_in_our_stars, Mindjacking has had two big holes in it that just about no-one seems to have noticed: the requirement for occupancy tier to match level and the clause that destroys mindjacked Avatars were both removed!! this proposal puts both of those clauses back into the ruleset, but makes the former a bit more generous: as long as an Avatar’s Home is above you and you can reach them, you can use them to Ascend. i expect we’ll also want an action to help higher-tier players divine the Home Tier of an Avatar whose name they know.
as a small rider, this proposal destroys extant avatars who are clogging up the works, as otherwise the tier restriction would stop most of us from ascending at all until we dropped down to Tier 1 and cleared the chaff (or did a lot of assassinations)! i think we’ll still need a few more cleared, but i didn’t wanna get overzealous in a fix proposal.

I haven’t been keeping extremely meticulous records of which Avatars have and have not appeared in reports so far, so the first clause might be tricky to discharge satisfactorily as written.

could you figure it out by going and looking at past reports?

Splitting the names out into component words kind of defeats that sadly.

edited accordingly; this replacement will still ask a bit of cross-referencing of you, but it can be derived just from the reports and the list of avatars.

against The fix is necessary, but the ladder pull at the end is unfair.

The second “Destroy all Avatars” clause presumably intended to destroy Mindjacking victims rather than those appearing in Activity Reports?

against For the same reason as the CfJ. You need to provide a way for the Ascendant to correct mistakes.

against Because I can’t carry out the avatar destruction step.
