Call for Judgment: The impossibility of compromise

1-7 / redtara

Adminned at 05 May 2023 00:07:31 UTC

By the passage of this CfJ, the player called Josh has achieved victory in this dynasty.

Compromise seems to be impossible, so we’re left with a binary choice: either we accept a metadynasty or we find some other way, that doesn’t involve a chop, start a new dynasty with a new Emperor. I don’t love metadynasties, and I don’t think I’m alone in that, so here’s my alternative: as the player with the highest quantity of the merit resource in the current dynasty, I am the only player with a reasonable (social) claim to come out of this as an Emperor-candidate. I don’t think I necessarily deserve an outright win but I don’t think that a fair chop is possible, so. Here we are.

against I felt like the discussions were moving towards some kind of gradual compromise among the active Engineers. We were still waiting for a number of votes to come in.

Idle players joining to push for a none-of-you-win metadynasty does get in the way of that, as does the Emperor vetoing, but this doesn’t make compromise impossible.

@Kevan Based on our discussions, such a “compromise” presumably explicitly excludes me, so go ahead and do your best; I look forward to joining the nihilistic children in voting against

Yes, I remain reluctant to give you more than a 50% chop off the dynasty. I think there may possibly have been a quorum in agreement with that on my Third Bid chop, but it was vetoed before everyone had a chance to cast a vote.

Hahaha, okay… I mean, my Opening Bod had more FOR votes than your Third Bid did, but sure, by all means, repost it as a CfJ and let’s see what happens.

You had a vote from the player you’d teamed up with a vote from the player you’d given a comedy 1% cut to. Most of the dynasty’s active players had yet to vote on either.

Sure, but at a minimum no chop proposal is going to get: Misty, Bucky, Benbot or Titanic. Your proposal specifically is not going to get: myself, Redtara. That’s 6/13; what’s your route to quorum? Every single other player? Because JonathanDark has already voted against it once.

Just to keep it on the record, I will not vote for any Proposal that gives Josh only a 50% chop. That’s really the only reason my vote for the metadynasty still stands, because I’ve not been given an alternative that’s satisfactory.

[Josh] It’s idealistic, but I can imagine a route to quorum where Misty, Bucky and Benbot agree to stand back and see if the people who played this dynasty can decide whether a chop for it is viable, fading to a metadynasty if we can’t.

Or, more pragmatically, where another idle player appears with a sidekick and a nobler aim, to negate the Bucky/Benbot votes.

Ah, you want A Good Guy With A Gun? You understand that someone swooping in from idle to resolve the dynasty in your favour has exactly the same legitimacy as Bucky/Benbot wrecking the game for all of us, and is exactly as noble?

The only legitimate path was a compromise between those who played the dynasty, and the obstacle to that is, has always been and remains you. If you want to flip the negotiating table back over the only person you have to convince is yourself; everyone else who has a legitimate grounds for compromise was ready quite some time ago.

I mean on every chop proposal, not just mine.

Bucky:

I’m not categorically against chop proposals; I could be bribed into voting for one.

@Kevan I think after the past 24 hours it would be massive hypocrisy for either of us to win off the back of from-idle votes. But, hey, 24 hours until Failed Ultimatum passes, so plenty of time.

[Josh] Hmm, I wouldn’t describe that as “winning off the back of”, it would just be negating the influence of previously-idle players over a chop vote, wouldn’t it? Bucky unidles and votes a chop down; a masked stranger unidles and votes the same chop up. The proposal is (unless I’ve missed some wrinkle of quorum) back where it started, as if Bucky hadn’t interrupted.

In theory, anyway. In practice you also have to deal with, eg. Bucky now announcing that they’d accept a bribe to swing a chop vote on a dynasty they didn’t play, or just changing their vote to be perverse, which our masked stranger might have to quickly reverse their vote on.
