Proposal: The National Union of Journalists

If either Proposal: A Wider Context or Proposal: Second Paradigm Lucky failed, this proposal does nothing.

Add the following as a sub-rule to the rule called “Everyone’s a Critic” entitled Professional Criticism:

Journalism is a Movement than an Artist can have, subject to the terms set out in the rule entitled “Movements”. An Artist may not change their Movement to Journalism if their Movement has been Journalism at any previous time. An Artist whose Movement is Journalism may also be referred to as a Journalist.

A Journalist may not exhibit a Work of Art.

When a Journalist Publishes a Critique, they may gain one Acclaim for every Artist that has expressed Approval of it.

I’d like to further finesse this later - make the relationship between artist and critic slightly more symbiotic.

against No way. The Journalist only getscritiques upon publishin, at which point no one has expressed approval.

@coppro - Are you confusing posting with Publishing? Rule 2.4 (“Everyone’s a Critic”) defines what Publishing is and by definition at least three Artists will have expressed Approval by then.

Nice. What’s the purpose of “An Artist may not change their Movement to Journalism if their Movement has been Journalism at any previous time” ?

@Anduril - I assumed it was to prevent a quick switch to Journalism prior to each Publication and then back again the next Day. Seems like good design.

@bateleur: No, 2.4 merely provides an alternate means to publishing a critique. By the glossary, the act of posting the critique in the first place also constitutes publishing. Thus the Artist can never use 2.4 to publish the critique since it will have already been published.

The, coppro, voting down this proposal doesn’t really help. If there is a problem then it already exists in the ruleset, not in this proposal. Might I suggest that you post a fix?

@coppro - I don’t really agree. The wording of 2.4 makes it perfectly clear that it’s defining Publishing (capital ‘P’) as a game keyword, whereas the core rule in question just happens to use the English word “publishing”.

I mean OK, this is Nomic, so if you want to get all excited about that kind of thing then you absolutely can… but I reserve the right to roll my eyes and not care in the meantime. ;-)
