Proposal: Throwing The Rulebook Away

In the rule “Official Rules”, replace

If there is an Ongoing Race, then with the exception of this rule all players must follow the dynastic rules in the Official Rules in place of the current dynastic rules.

with

If there is an Ongoing Race and the Race Number is less than 5, then with the exception of this rule all players must follow the dynastic rules in the Official Rules in place of the current dynastic rules.

There doesn’t seem to be much reason to keep separate rulesets anymore.

Also given that the time for Race 5 is set quite strictly, it’s possible (at least in theory) that a proposal would end up being popular but not be enacted before I need to create the Race.

I was going to propose this myself – it’s a very sensible idea.

Why not just repeal the rule wholesale? At this point the effect is the same.

I’m tepidly against this as it brings a lot of admin advantage back in (see, ais, I frequently vote against interest on ideological grounds)

Maybe address that issue head-on, then? Something like restricting Plays by the admin enacting a Proposal during an Ongoing Race until another Snail has made a Play? It wouldn’t solve the collaboration case, but it’s a start.

That’s then a disincentive to performing admin duties.

I don’t think we’re going to fix the two-decaes-outstanding issue of admin advantaged in this dynasty, sorry.

We can fix the admin advantage issue by voting down proposals that would provide one. We still end up better off than we do at the moment, in which such proposals can’t be usefully enacted at all.

against I think we can manage with CfJs; we should be trying to avoid changing the rules in the middle of a Race anyway, and this is only an issue if the next race drags out for more than a week, which we’re all agreed it’s not going to… right?

for because changing the rules mid-race may be useful if we discover an issue in them that prevents the race continuing normally/sensibly, or if the race starts before some of the previous proposals are adminned. (My “I was going to propose this myself” was inspired by Race Chaser – that seems like the sort of change that would be useful to be able to make once the race starts.)

I agree with Josh in this case. If there is an issue that prevents the race from continuing normally/sensibly, we CfJ the change, in which the CfJ makes the change and also contains instructions to set the Official Ruleset link to the history version containing that change.

Where it could get sticky is if there were Proposals enacted post-Race start that are unrelated to the desired change, in which case the CfJ would have to undo those as well in order to isolate the desired change. It’s a little awkward, but manageable. However, we seem to all be agreeing that we’re not going to try to change the rules unless necessary, so a breaking issue that really needs a change should be a straight-forward CfJ.

against, since I enjoy the Endgame Lockdown-esque effect the official rules have going into this final race
