Proposal: tidy tidy

3-9. Cannot be enacted unless a CoV occurs. Thus, it fails. -Elias IX

Add a section to the Glossary entitled “No Presents on Halloween” that reads:

All numbers in the Ruleset are assumed to be decimal numbers unless otherwise specified.

If this proposal is necessary, I claim that I could pass/fail all pending proposals up to this one based on majority by reading ‘48 hours’ in base -10, in which case the proposals are all more than -32 (decimal) hours old.

I didn’t want to do this unilaterally in case this whole thing is stupid.

for Knowing some of the players, this is a good idea.

for Sure, but it seems to me that base 10 numerals are essentially a part of English spelling.  If we are assuming that the rest of the ruleset is in English, and specifically not in some kind of bizarrely respelled English, than the assumption of base 10 numerals should logically follow from that.

that’s why I picked a part of the Ruleset that uses numerals instead of direct English to make the point.  I hope nobody would debate that ‘ten’ is this many: ||||||||||, but ‘10’ can be whatever a tricky player wants.

From the glossery in the rules set:

Unless otherwise specified, game variables defined to hold numeric values can hold only non-negative integers, and any action that would set those values below zero instead sets them to zero. Any situation which would require a roll of DiceX when X is zero or lower always yields a value of 0 unless stated otherwise.

against Oh, come on.  A scam along these lines wouldn’t be valid simply because there exists a possible usage and interpretation of numerals that supports the scam.

I think that including this line would give new players a false impression that we are so nitpicky that such a line is necessary.

As an aside, even if this were a good idea, does it deserve an entire Glossary section devoted to it?  Especially such a strangely named one (Yes, I get the joke.  Dec 25 = Oct 31.  rofl).

I suppose someone could try to use something other than base 10, but I think it is accepted that we all use the same number systems. Speaking of:
There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don’t.

I wasn’t referring to spelled-out numbers like “ten”, but to the numerals like “10”.  It’s a part of the understanding of English that “10” means |||||||||| or however you want to represent it.  If I were transliterating a language that used base 8 into latin letters, I would naturally assume “10” to mean |||||||| instead.  You can’t just decide that “10” means anything you like any more than you can decide that “the” means anything you like.

I could decide that I speak “Cl-english” and in “Cl-english” the accurate english translation of the ruleset would mean “Clucky is awesome. E always achieves victory”. Just like we can assume that everything in the ruleset is english, we can assume everything is base ten.  If someone wants to abuse the rules, then we can deal with in then, but hopefully no one will be dumb enough to abuse the rules as it would just delay the game as we sort it would with a CfJ.
