Proposal: @ to %3, Checkmate

Enacted 8-0. Josh

Adminned at 12 Feb 2022 21:40:53 UTC

If Proposal: Draft Board was enacted then this proposal has no further effect.

Add a new rule to the ruleset, called Symbology:

Each Player may have a unique Symbol, which is publicly tracked and which defaults to an empty string (signifying that they have no Symbol). A Player with no Symbol may set their Symbol to any single character from the WGL4 character, with the following distinctions:

* Each Player’s Symbol must be unique; a Player may not select a Symbol that has already been selected by any active or idle Player (Symbols selected by idle Players should be publicly tracked);
* Each Player’s Symbol must be visually distinct; a Player may not select a Symbol that a casual observer would fail to distinguish from the existing Symbol of another Player or idle Player;
* A Player may not select U+0020-0 or U+00A0-0.

A Player without a Symbol may not carry out any dynastic action not described in this rule.

No teams; we just flood the board as individuals

if we ever try to propose anything using other symbols this could quickly become annoying

ОΟO

that is 041E (cryillic), 039F (greek) and 004F (latin). But as far as I can tell they are indistinguishable. So I think we need a curated list to choose from.

We also should find a way to deal with players who pick a symbol, go idle, someone else now uses their old symbol, and now they rejoin and suddenly the symbol isn’t unique anymore

@Clucky I’ve made some changes; there is a subjective check on distinguishability, which seems like a better solution than a curated list; illegal values can be quickly stripped away by CfJ.

looks pretty good, though should probably add another “(or idle Player)” at the end of the second line

also think we need to ban 00A0 as well. Not sure how it is different from 0020. Or maybe word it in a way that they also need to be distinguishable from the space character

also I think “should"s are better than “must"s here because you could argue that a “must” makes changing your symbol to be confusingly close is illegal, but that is very objective. “Should"s would allow the game to play on while the CFJ resolves the issue.

I have made the first two changes.

I’m a little leery of shoulds, as they seem to troublingly often resolve to someone saying “that’s recommended, not mandatory” as a way of simply ignoring the clause - which, to be fair, is often how we use them, so it’s not wrong.

Yeah we really need one word for “recommended” one for “you really should do this” and one for “its legally required that you do this”—stuff like this or when you’re talking about certain actions someone needs to perform fall into that middle category that we don’t really have a word for.

I’d just rather the gameplay ramifications of someone doubling up on a symbol to be “change the symbol and play on” and not “turns out that action was illegal so unwind a bunch of stuff”

We should probably specify a range with more uniqueness among its characters than as is in the proposal.

Just noticed you wrote “WGL4 character” instead of “from the “WGL4 character set”, but I think that would qualify as an obvious typo?
