Proposal: Treasure Hunt

Self killed by AG to avert Bucky’s scam.

Adminned at 06 Jun 2006 20:59:41 UTC

Add a new Rule titled ‘Treasure Hunt’:

A Monk who has more than three Moves may Search a Location that e is at (listed in the GNDT) by spending three Moves and sending a communication to the Abbot.

The Abbot shall then check a list of secret rules that contain a list of Locations and Items. If the Monk is on one such Location and meets the stated conditions (possibly referencing the Items the Monk has, the state of Game Time, probability checks, etc) the Abbot shall inform them of this and add that Item to their inventory in the GNDT if they have less than three Items.

The Abbot may edit that list of Items for plot reasons and as the need for new Locations arises.

A Monk may not Search more than six Locations in one twenty-four hour period.

Create a secret list and populate it with Items and Locations.

How do find the right Locations? Classical Literature comes to mind, as well as some other rules, brute force, and clues in Story Posts. I am aware of the time delay, but I am often on IRC in the evenings and I have added a function to the IRC sidebar to display who is in the channel.

against because there’s already too much secrecy in the monastery.

I agree with Thelonious about the secrecy thing…

but I really like the idea of digging for treasure.

There is a fair bit of secrecy, true, but there are several ways of revealing secret rules, and at least one of them is in plain English in the core ruleset.

If the consensus is that things are still too obscure, let’s just add more ways to reveal secret rules.

And let’s include encrypted ones, too, if the cryptograms are difficult for the median-skilled player. ;)

I wanted to experiment with a new dynamic in this game, not make things burdensome for the players.

I was intending to include encrypted rules when I said “too much secrecy in the monastery”.

For those who accept my thesis, there are a couple of things to do.

(1) Don’t vote for proposals, like this one, that include secret elements.

(2) Vote for proposals that reveal secrets.

I note that my last attempt at revealing secrets was voted down (and I think AG said he would have veto’d it if he’d remembered he was able to do that).  All the same, I’ll have another go.

The sole reason that I was unfavorably disposed to that proposal is that not only did it reveal secrets, it also removed them indefinitely from the game. ;)

for This doesn’t seem all that secret to me.  It’s not like any non-Abbot Monks have any special knowledge of where the items will be.

This game already has way too much “hidden” and “secret” information.  As much as the “figure out the clues I leave to get random stuff” dynamic appeals to me…  Maybe the next Theme.
