Proposal: Unban list

Timed out 1-3 with 1 DEF. Failed by JonathanDark.

Adminned at 26 Oct 2023 18:31:49 UTC

Change the final step of the Perform a Duel atomic action to read:

* Randomly choose a spell which is neither mentioned in any Gewgaws affecting this duel nor which has the tag [Always Available] from the Spell List for the current duel, and remove it from the spell list.

In the rule spells, add the following point after “a set of traits” (or “a speed”, if “a set of traits” does not exist):

*a number of tags

To the subrules of the rule Spells called “Snipe”, “Misdirection”, “Fizzle”, and “Gather”, add the following:

Tags: [Always Available]

If Proposal: This Round’s Banned Spell Is… failed, this proposal instead does nothing.

Counterplay spells should always remain active. Some spells entire risk is that they are obvious and can be shut down, but if snipe/misdirection are removed, then there’s no reason not to go for those risky spells. Also sets up the framework to easily add more spells to an unban list later if we want.

Why is Gather always active?

Gather feels like the most basic “do something good” spell, seemed safe to leave it always active

Rather than re-write the Spells paragraph, could you just “add the following bullet”? Otherwise, if Myers and Briggs Wizard Sorting System is enacted, and then this Proposal is enacted, it would erase the changes from the previous one.

The way I worded mine was:

In the rule “Spells” add the following bullet point after “a speed”:

  * a set of traits

Snisbo: she/they

Will do! Wasn’t sure if we generally consider that precise enough, but sounds good

I suppose, though, tags and “a set of traits” are essentially the same thing, no? Might we write it so [Always Available] is a trait, instead?

Not really, though. I intended for Traits to be matched to a Wizard’s personality. If anything, I’d rather do it the reverse way, and rename “Traits” to “Tags” for each Spell.

I’m ok if you want to either do that in this Proposal, or reconcile that in a later one.

I’ll just update my wording in this spell. Keeping them separate from each other seems fine

One more thing: the atomic action is called “Schedule a Duel” in the ruleset, not “Perform a Duel”.

against Too heavyweight for what it does. Always Available should be ad hoc rather than a tag system.

I also think that rounds where a core counterplay option is missing are more interesting, rather than less interesting, than ones where a fringe option is missing. The only spell I think should be Always Available is Fizzle, and then only because of Snipe.
