Call for Judgment: Welcome to the Orphanage

Timed out and failed, 3-4. Josh

Adminned at 02 May 2023 15:27:42 UTC

Uphold each action made in this dynasty that would otherwise have been legal had the variables known as the Building, the Building Number and the Building Stability been publicly tracked. Uphold that the values for those variables are what they would have been had those actions thus upheld been legal.

If Proposal: Construction Site Cleanup has not been enacted, add the following to the end of the first paragraph of the rule The Building:

The Building, the Building Number and Building Stability are all publicly tracked.

Greencheck from me after the 4-hour edit window, unless we just want to dispense with waiting for that. The wording seems fine to me.

Thanks for getting the mop. The addition could maybe use a rider on Construction Site Cleanup not having enacted (you never know), so that we don’t end up repeating ourselves.

Context for players and future historians who aren’t on Discord (as my Mentee has just asked me why I was voting against this): this CfJ was raised to fix the orphan variable issue which rendered virtually all game actions invalid. While it was pending, a few players noticed moves worth taking and tried to take them on the grounds that they would be validated by the CfJ (even though it’s technically illegal to attempt them now), but it’s strongly arguable that they won’t.

If this CfJ does enact, the enacting admin would be able to take those optimum actions 100% legally straight after enactment, and be in a strong position for a CfJ arguing that their actions were legal and the others were not.

Though I get the gist of what is happening, I don’t understand the details. Hopefully I’ll get there some day. For now I’ll support the veterans. against

Taiga noticed that the ruleset doesn’t explicitly specify that the various bits of Building gamestate are publicly tracked. This means that this gamestate is considered “orphaned” because the ruleset isn’t sure if it’s meant to be public or private, and as a consequence it’s illegal for players to take any action dependent on that data, which is ... virtually all of the game right now.

(From Appendix 4.2.3: “An Orphan Variable is a dynastic gamestate variable which has neither a location in which it’s tracked, nor a reasonable manner in which it can be determined from other gamestate variables, specified in the Ruleset. An Engineer may not take any dynastic actions that are contingent on the specific value of an Orphan Variable.”)

TBH I think that this is still worth passing, just in case the Chop process doesn’t work.
