Proposal: We’re All Gonna Die

Create a new dynastic rule named “Collapse” with the following body:

If all three Megasystems are Destroyed, no Machinist may achieve victory.

If all three Megasystems have been Destroyed for the last 24 hours, the Great Machine or any Machinist may Give Up, which is an atomic action with the following steps:
* End the current Dynasty
* Begin a new Metadynasty with no Great Machine
* Repeal all dynastic rules

here’s even more of an incentive to repair

This should require all three Megasystems to stay destroyed for a day before a Give Up, in case anyone is in a position for last-minute repairs.

fair enough, added

the Give Up action is technically optional right now, might want to make it forced

Will be voting against this for potentially forcing a metadynasty onto the next group of players - I think metadynasties generally just aren’t as enjoyable or successful as regular dynasties. (I’m kind of disappointed that my 2016 “secretly-chosen player wins” fail state never caught on as a default.)

I think cooperative-style “nobody wins” fail states are also a tricky fit for a competitive game. A player or group who realise that they definitely aren’t going to win may switch to hastening that failure, if they’d tactically and morally prefer to see a neutral “nobody loses, nobody wins” outcome over “leading rival wins”.

It also unevenly affects some agendas more than others. If multiple players have destruction based objectives, then they’re essentially forced to push much harder for the “everybody loses” fail-state compared to someone who has goals like ensuring some megasystems are fully repaired.

@Kevan that’s a very interesting mechanic you’ve linked there — i don’t think it works in this dynasty, but i’ll keep it in mind as an alternate fail state to a metadynasty.

@lendunistus i don’t think this is a good implementation, but i get the need for something that fills the niche that this is trying to!!

i have a mechanic in mind where players can be majorly penalised for being judged as being directly responsible for allowing lots of damage to the Machine (since y’all are supposed to be mechanics, for godsakes)! i’m still thinking on the details though, so it’ll be a day or a couple before i propose it; if anyone else can think of a suitable mechanic to fill that niche in the meantime — not just incentivising repairs, but disincentivising being responsible for harm to the machine — i’ll certainly support that :0

It really isn’t great that in all likelihood, some players are going to *have* to risk causing a metadynasty to accomplish their objectives.
