Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled The Second Age [Mandatory]:

If the Round Number is 8 then, as a Mandatory Action, an Islander must take the following Mandatory atomic action:

* Set the Round Number to 11
* Set the values of all tracked gamestate information for all Islands to their new-player default values
* Remove this rule from the ruleset

I’m all for this, but I don’t think the number of the pronoun “its” agrees with that of “values” or that of “all Islands.”

Yes, it’s a bit clumsily worded. I’m going to consider those to be typos and fix them.

Wouldn’t we have to perform this every turn of every Round, under the instruction to “Carry out all Mandatory Actions in the order of their choosing”? Whether or not we’re in Round 8 yet, the rule still defining the thing there as being an action of the type “Mandatory”.

Hm, interesting. I would argue no, as a rule that contains a mandatory action has to have the [Mandatory] tag but not vice versa, so a rule with the [Mandatory] tag doesn’t have to contain a mandatory action. The first sentence then ensures that the action is not mandatory until Round 8.

for I agree: the action is not mandatory until round 8. But it may be a good idea to require all mandatory actions to be in the same place.

The rule is literally saying “the following Mandatory atomic action”. That bunch of text is a Mandatory action.

If it’s Round 8 then it’s a Mandatory action and this rule compels us to take it; if it’s Round 1-7 then it’s a Mandatory action and this rule doesn’t compel us to take it (but another one does).

I think I’m with Kevan on this—the use of “Mandatory” twice in successive clauses is a problem.  against

i’m thinking Kevan is right on this. maybe if the action were worded in such a way that it only did something if the round counter is at 8?

against I’ll reword. I think there will be a few cases where we want something to become mandatory at a certain point so defining that language might be helpful. s/k
