Proposal: Would’ve been a fun scam, but I’m still having fun

Add the following to the second paragraph of the “The Crypt of Dracula”

Room names may not contain the word “Dracula”

If any room currently contains the word “Dracula” replace it with “Alucard”. Then, for each pair of rooms have the same name, randomly select one of them an append “1” to its name and append “2” to the other one in the pair. Repeat this step until no rooms have the same name.

Currently I feel that were someone to add a room called “Dracula”, Dracula would exists as an entity in the game. Then adding one called “Dracula is Dust” is a bit more of a stretch, but you could probably argue “Dracula exists as an entity in the game, and Dracula is Dust (also exists as an entity in the game)”, and thus the end game clause is fulfilled.

People might shoot the scam down for flavour texts reasons. Or maybe the “Dracula is dust” bit is a bridge too fair. But better safe than sorry.

I agree that the scam doesn’t work for flavour text reasons but agree that better safe than sorry.

So you’re saying we can refer to the Library of Souls and the rules are clear as to what that means, but the Library of Souls doesn’t exist as an entity in the game?

I don’t really buy that. Flavor texts means my room named “Kevan is Dust” doesn’t dust Kevan. But Kevan is Dust would still be an entity in the game.

I’d also spotted this and wasn’t sure if it’d fly.

Josh has been scrupulous about referring to rooms as eg. “the room called Crypt Entrance” in rule text, but I think the answer to the question “does the Crypt Entrance exist as an entity in the game?” (which is what’s being asked of Dracula) could plausibly be yes.

The wording of the flavour text restrictions are really tight:

If a part of the ruleset is defined as being “flavour text”, it is gamestate and remains part of the ruleset document, but is not considered to have any meaning beyond being a string of characters. Vampire Lords are not required to obey flavour text and may not perform any action defined by it, and any statements that flavour text makes about gamestate are ignored.

There’s not a whole lot of wriggle-room there, I think, although admittedly “ruletext cannot be considered to be referring to flavour text unless specifically stating otherwise” might close the tiny remaining gap down.

Oh hang on! Wild: only ruletext can be flavour text?

Huh.

Even without that bombshell, rules are explicitly allowed to refer to rooms by their names: “Room names must be unique and may be used to specifically refer to the room that carries them; otherwise, they are flavour text.”

I think “specifically” there might be enough to foil a room with the name of Geraldine Has Achieved Victory - or, for that matter, Dracula - but I still don’t want to test it.

I’m still stunned that we’ve been using flavour text wrong all these years.

It would foil Geraldine, but I think it’d wave through “Dracula exists as an entity in the game” as correctly referring to a room, just as much as the Warp Whistle did when it set Richardo’s location to somewhere else “rather than the Crypt Entrance”.

When flavour text came in we were playing a dynasty where the descriptive text was in the ruleset, and we were playing around with mechanics that made entire rules into flavour text to switch them off, so I guess it wasn’t at the forefront of our minds to also apply it to a wiki table.
