Proposal: Yellow Card

Reached quorum 4 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 Sep 2023 13:59:18 UTC

Remove all upcoming Soccer, Estate Agent Wrestling and Blogbots matches from the Form Sheet. Remove all Bets on those matches.

In the list marked “The Sports that can occur as part of a Sporting Event are as follows:”, remove Soccer, Estate Agent Wrestling and Blogbots.

In “Form Sheet”, replace “for each upcoming day and add them to the list” with:-

for each upcoming day without a Sporting Event and add them to the list

The three complex sports are feeling like the muddiest part of the dynasty to me, right now - they’re too dense to get an instinctive player-level understanding of, and there are too many of them for me to want to spend time writing scripted simulations to inform my betting. So a straw poll on whether a quorum are feeling the same. I’m ambivalent on whether we should simplify them, remove them or black box their method of operation.

I’d personally rather see all of them black-boxed, but I know that Josh was in favor of a combination of reduction and black-boxing. If we consider all of the current Sports in this idea, here’s my proposed list, and we black-box all of them:

* ClingBoom
* Giolitti
* Estate Agent Wrestling
* Blogbots

Remove the rest.

Personally I’m in favor of going with less complex things than black boxing everything, but that’s definitely biased because I don’t want to see all my Boxing work go down the drain :sweat_smile:

Blogbots is the only one bet on so far, and you’re going to remove it?

Didn’t notice there was a bet pending. I’ve added a line to this proposal to remove it if this enacts.

Part of what I see as the core appeal of the dynasty is that a Punter doesn’t need to fully understand every sport. You can restrict your bets to the ones you do understand well enough to get favorable results, and let the Bookie handle the details. Getting rid of sports you don’t like to bet on does mean sports you do like will come up more often, however.

The three sports you called out here are distinct from the others in valuable ways. Soccer and Blogbots have public asymmetry. Soccer is the only sport with advanced odds implemented. Estate Agent Wrestling has an open source simulator, putting everyone but Josh on equal footing. The sports most redundant with each other from my PoV are the card games Nomich and Giolitti with Boxing. These are two-participant sports with nothing to differentiate the competitors besides meddlings.

The difficulty of understanding, I blame on the resolution posts being too far from a play-by-play to teach players how the sport works, aside from occasional details that are misleading or outright erroneous.

We can all read how the sports work in the ruleset, I just feel like there’s too much complexity here, and spread too far. We have had similar gameplay complexity in past dynasties, but as the sole and single focus: not spread over eight subgames, where putting effort into fully understanding the nuances of Estate Agent Wrestling might end up being a waste of time if few or no further bouts of it happen.

If my feeling about this is wrong then I’ll up my game or idle out, but if most people are feeling the same about the dynasty (and the Emperor doesn’t object), we should probably do something about it.

This isn’t a repeal, just a moratorium. We can rework the games to be simpler while keeping the asymmetry and whatever else.

I do agree, and given that Bucky has (with his usual grace and politeness) pointed out that the most recent summary post had an error, the complexity is clearly a bit much for my tastes, too.

  for Closing the Box goes a step further than this, but the addition to the Form Sheet allowing me to plug gaps is useful.
