Add a new rule to the ruleset, called Usurping the Mantle:

If the game is in Interregnum then no Ascension Address may be posted, nor may the mantle be passed, until at least 24 hours have elapsed since the enactment of the most recent Declaration of Victory.

Usurping the Mantle is an action that may only be performed under the following conditions:
*The game is in interregnum
*The performer has a Secret that contains the name of exactly one other Villager
*The performer’s Secret has not been changed in the preceding 72 hours
*The Villager named in the performer’s Secret is the Villager who ascended to Blizzard as a result of the most recently enacted Declaration of Victory.

If all of these conditions are not met then Usurping the Mantle cannot be performed.

Usurping the Mantle is an action in which a Villager posts their Secret, their Jotting and their Tell in a new post to the Blognomic Blog. If, after 24 hours of interregnum, a single Villager has legally Usurped the Mantle, then that Villager becomes Blizzard and all other Blizzards cease to be Blizzard. If, during an interregnum, multiple Villagers attempt to Usurp the Mantle then no Villagers Usurp the Mantle and the status of Blizzard is unchanged. Otherwise, the current Blizzard remains Blizzard.

Is it intended that this doesn’t give any way to actually set your Secret, so you can’t actually ever Usurp?

Yeah, it’s a fire break to ensure there aren’t any minute-one scams. It can be turned on by proposal after some discussion.

The Dune mechanic is a classic, but giving everyone a free guess with no downside feels like a bit of a bunfight, particularly if those guesses can be made during endgame when it’s likely to be clear who’s in the lead.

@Kevan The balancing mechanic here is not being able to change your Secret, which I expect to be important in the endgame based on your proposal

imperial  I do like the idea of this, but I’m not sure how good the gameplay it will create will be. If someone has a clear shot at winning, I’d expect multiple players to be listing them in a secret so it will do nothing there.

On the flip-side, in the early game to mid-game, you’ll probably get known scammers being listed just on the off-chance that they pull off a winning scam.

I assume the multiple-players situation would become a pool where they’d agree to randomly pre-select who would get to take the Usurp action, with the others standing down.

[Josh] Not being able to change a Secret for a couple of days will matter to the leading players jockeying for first place, but barely at all to those further back.
