Call for Judgment: Captain can’t be on both sides

Passed, 8-6, timed out. The mutiny becomes a fleeting memory that never occurred. - Elias IX

Rule 2.19 states:

Each Swashbuckler may choose to Support or Oppose this Mutiny by posting a comment that includes either a FOR or AGAINST flag respectively, and a mention of their GPS at the time of the comment.

Each player can only thus post one comment to support one side.

However, the captain, by declaring a mutiny, automatically takes the illegal action of posting a comment to support both sides.  Therefore, declaring the mutiny was an illegal action.

My interpretation:

Each Swashbuckler may choose to Support this Mutiny or may choose to Oppose this Mutiny.

In the glossary, “may” is defined as “is permitted to”.

Therefore, everyone is permitted to do both, as the word “or” doesn’t necessarily state that the two are mutually exclusive.

The only limitations are that I post one flag in each comment, and it’s been considered that I’ve done so.

for You may choose to support or oppose, but doing both was not given as an option in a straightforward reading of that rule.

against I actually can’t see any clause that says you aren’t allowed to both oppose and support a mutiny - merely that you can only declare one allegiance per comment.

Interpreting in the way that any number of comments may be posted supporting or opposing the mutiny also opens the loophole of spamming to acheive a large cumulative GPS.

The issue in question is whether an “or” in the ruleset is a logical “OR or “XOR”.

Also, when the rules say that “all participating Swashbucklers gain 1 GPS,” it implies that you only get 1 GPS no matter how many times you support a side.

This also affects punishments—can we change our vote on a punishment or do we support both sides?

I interpret ‘may choose’ differently than our Captain, in that ‘may’ applies to the act of choosing—since A swashbuckler may also not participate either way in the mutiny.

A choice is implicitly exclusive, and had the Captain’s interpretation been meant, the rule should read ‘Each Swashbuckler may Support or Oppose this Mutiny by posting…’ without mention of a choice.

I’m hesitant in doing this, but for
