Debating…

I like the debate idea, but getting it to work without Thog doing lots of work seems like it would be a challenge.
Starting the debates is easy. I have the that part proposed below although could use some help on coming up with issues. The hard part is resolution—we want people voting for the best debate responses, not just for the people they strategically like. Then again, IRL McCain and Obama arn’t going to be wearing masks during their debates, so maybe knowing who gave the replies *wouldn’t* be a bad thing as long as we keep the “no voting for yourself” rule in place. What do you guys think?

Prior to the Election, there are eight debates which occur for candidates to gain support in. Debates are numbered in order of their occurrence, starting at 1 and ending at eight. Each debate has a length, a venue, a issue and a start date. The length of a debate is equal to 30 times the number of the debate. The venue of the debate is equal to number of active candidates at the start of the debate times the five times of the number of the debate. The issue and start dates are as follows:

Debate 1: Start Date: 8-8-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “Ogres: Hideous Monsters or Misunderstood Civilians?”
Debate 2: Start Date: 8-15-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “Whats the bestest cheese in the world?”
Debate 3: Start Date: 8-23-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “”
Debate 4: Start Date: 8-30-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “”
Debate 5: Start Date: 9-6-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “”
Debate 6: Start Date: 9-13-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “”
Debate 7: Start Date: 9-20-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “”
Debate 8: Start Date: 9-27-2008 at 00:00:00 GMT. Issue: “How does one pronounce “nomic” anyway?”

I like the idea so far.  Debates start of fridays.  We need a rule for what happens if a debate has not been posted yet (i.e. if it has not already been posted, any candidate may post a debate using the following format: ______)

And then we need something to happen if there is no “Issue” (If there is no issue at the time of the debate, the Candidate that posts the debate may decided upon the issue.)

For voting, simply have a results post and each candidate can comment with the name of another candidate.  Only the most recent comment counts and comments only count if they contain only 1 name.  Candidates can vote for themselves, the candidate with the most votes, is then permitted to distribute the supporters as they see fit.

Alliances should be plentiful in this nomic.

Remember, real elections aren’t just about who is the ‘best’ at a debate, it’s also how the campaign can spin responses, how the campaigns work together against more popular canddiates, etc.

“Candidates can vote for themselves, the candidate with the most votes, is then permitted to distribute the supporters as they see fit.”

I don’t like the whole winner takes all part of it. I’d rather have it be proportional to how many people vote for you.

The problem with it being open, is it potentially turns into a popularity contest. Its not like what I say during the debates actually matters, and so while some people might use the text of the debates in who they vote for, others might just vote for friends.

Make the debate questions about the next nomic then?  Actaully campaign for the win.

or we could just do the moderator idea and give some bonus to the moderator (like 5 * round # supporters)
