Proposal: Edit the Edits

Withdrawn. Josh

Adminned at 31 Mar 2025 14:28:42 UTC

In the rule Wording Fixes, replace the phrase

arrow AGAINST icon

with

arrow REVISE icon

wherever it appears in the rule. Also, replace the phrase

(the “arrow” AGAINST icon)

with

(the “arrow” REVISE icon)

in the first sentence.

I claim, for Ladder Combo, the word “rule”. It has appeared consecutively in 7 previous proposals, and as such has a value of 7.

I may as well repeat the comments in question so that people don’t need to follow the link:

This breaks things – if the arrow icon is not a voting icon it can’t be a counted vote, and if it’s not an against icon it can’t be used to withdraw proposals.

The reason why I made the arrow icon a sort of against icon in the first place (rather than a new sort of voting icon) is that it substantially decreases the number of patches to the core rules that are necessary to keep the core rules working once the new icon was added; my first draft of the proposal had it as a new voting icon but basically every place in the rules that mentioned against votes needed to be updated to handle revise votes as well, and saying “this is a sort of against icon” patched up all those places automatically.

Currently, the start of the rule reads

This dynasty, the voting icons (the “cross” AGAINST icon) and (the “arrow” AGAINST icon) are both considered to be AGAINST voting icons.

This proposal would change it to

This dynasty, the voting icons (the “cross” AGAINST icon) and (the “arrow” REVISE icon) are both considered to be AGAINST voting icons.

I do not believe that changing the name of the arrow icon would change the latter part of that first sentence, as despite it’s new name as a REVISE icon, the rule text still states that it is considered to be an AGAINST voting icon.

I would like to clarify that my previous comment is not an EVC and I am not withdrawing this proposal at this time. for I am still in favor of this proposal.

Ah, I see – I think that might work?

With respect to the “was this proposal accidentally withdrawn” question, I originally thought it was, but now I’m not sure – the rule says “Each Nomicer may cast one Vote on a Votable Matter by making a comment to the Official Post that comprises that Votable Matter using a voting icon of FOR, AGAINST, or DEFERENTIAL.” but the comment didn’t just use “a” voting icon, it used four of them.

We’ve historically counted that as a valid vote, but I’m not sure that you actually did cast a vote now that I look at the rule. It may be that it changes your vote (“A Nomicer‘s Vote on a Votable Matter is the last valid voting icon that they have used in any comment on that Votable Matter.”) without actually casting a vote (thus not being a withdraw) – the rules don’t seem to require that a Nomicer’s Vote on a Votable Matter matches the choices they made in the action of voting. But I’m not at all confident about thiis.

Unfortunately, I *think* this is withdrawn. The most recent icon on a valid vote at one point in time was the arrow, and withdraws can’t be taken back.

I don’t think you can accidentally withdraw a proposal. I think you withdraw a proposal by casting an against vote but it doesn’t necessarily follow that all against votes are withdrawals. I think intentionality matters.

Ah, reading the rule it doesn’t actually support that. Yeah, I think that SB is correct, this was some friendly fire.

Dang it. Well, I’ll try not to make that mistake again in future. Also, this is the second time I’ve tried to make this proposal, so I’ll hold off from a third attempt unless anyone would still prefer to have the wording changed.
