Proposal: Enough Stalling

Timed out and enacted, 4-3. Josh

Adminned at 24 Jul 2021 18:32:08 UTC

In “Richardo’s Journey” replace everything before “If the Organ is Playing, Richardo von Nestor may Enter the Crypt, which is an atomic action with the following steps:” with

Witching Hour is a publicly tacked date and time. When Richardo von Nestor or a Vampire Lord Winds the Clock, they take the current time, add 24 hours, roll a DICE24 and add the resulting number in hours, and that becomes the new Witching Hour. Whenever the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor Winds the Clock. If the current time is after Witching Hour, the Organ is Playing. Otherwise the Organ is not Playing. While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed.

If the Organ was not playing immediately before this proposal was enacted, Wind the Clock. If it was, set the Witching Hour to be the current time.

The last two sentences are redundant with each other; the winding will undo the setting of the Witching Hour.

I recommend something like “if Richardo has not Entered the Crypt since this proposal was posted, set the Witching Hour to the current time; otherwise Wind the Clock”.

Apart from that, this may be preferable to the current system. Both somewhat favour players who can be online at a range of different times, but at least this one keeps the game moving.

Also, I’m not 100% sure that “Richardo” works as an abbreviation for “Richardo von Nestor”; as far as I can tell, there’s no reason that someone couldn’t, e.g., create a room named Richardo, in which case the rule would presumably refer to that.

I had originally written it as just adding the time from last witching hour hence the need to set the current time so it doesn’t start at 0 and make Josh do 9k runs in a row just to get into the 2020s.

Setting the witching hour to the current time would be unfair to whoever gets to be on when its close to proposing.

There are multiple other places in the rules where Richardo is referred to by just Richardo.

I was just thinking, what if this passes while the Organ is playing (as it quite possibly will be given the state of the queue)? I guess a sensible admin would hold off on adminning it in that case until after the expedition had happened.

yeah. I’d rather not overly complicate things. sure there is a chance the organ finally starts playing and this passes and then we need to wait a couple more days whatever.

hrm actually that is a quick fix. hold on

You have the last sentence backwards; you want to set to the current time if the organ was playing, and wind if it wasn’t.

Soft for  - I see the downsides to drop-dead times and I have some sympathy for the argument that they’d make the game more inaccessible for those who aren’t extremely online but the status quo is, I think, more of a problem.

“Setting the witching hour to the current time would be unfair to whoever gets to be on when its close to proposing.”

Setting the witching hour to a public DICE24 o’clock is unfair in the same way. If someone knows that their opponent will be asleep at that point, they can safely wall in or link up that player’s best rooms with impunity, knowing that they won’t be able to do anything in response. If the last few rounds of the game all happen to end around 4am in a leading player’s timezone, that could swing the whole dynasty.

It’s also going to see some pushing and shoving and “another edit was made, please edit and resubmit” on the wiki in the minutes before each round’s deadline. Which is a game in itself, but not one I particularly want to switch to at this point.

i mean its random sure, but most of this dynasty is random. and it beats rounds that take four days to run because people keep slow playing their moves

against I’d rather this be determined secretly by Richardo. Also, there’s an arguable scam here that any player can arbitrarily Wind the Clock as a free action whenever they like?

defining winding the clock doesn’t give you permission to wind the clock. and turning the dynasty into a game of press your luck feels like a very different dynasty
