Proposal: Forage or Perish

1-2. Timed out.—Chronos

Adminned at 09 Apr 2007 04:47:01 UTC

In rule Evolutionary Variables, change

A lifeform may often increase one of eir evolutionary variables

to

A lifeform may often Evolute. Evolute means increase one of eir evolutionary variables

Add a Foraging rule:

Often, instead of Evoluting, a Lifeform may Forage, by make a Foraging check by rolling DICE6 once in the GNDT.  On a result of 4 or higher, the Forage is a success; otherwise, it fails.  A Successful Foragin chek provides 0.01*the Foraging Lifeform’s Body Mass*the Gene Pool’s DNA, rounded up.  The Gene Pool loses DNA equal to half the DNA that the Foraging Lifeform gained, rounded down.

When this Proposal is enacted, Chronos Phaenon and Axeling receive each 2.5 * A - 1.5 * B DNA points where A is the number of counted legal FOR votes cast on this proposal and B is the number of counted legal AGAINST votes, instead of what they would receive or be entitled to as per rule Evolutionary Currency.

The gene pool isn’t designed to lose DNA. It is designed to provide balance for people who join late. I like the concept, but would rather have forage simply give DNA and Nourishment. It shouldn’t take away from the gene pool.

Also, foraging does not increase a Lifeform’s nourishment?  What?  Revise to include nourishment and you’ll get a FOR vote from me.

Thanks Chronos for resurrecting my proposal, and the others for the comments.  Here are some of my own.

The main reason I had it based off of the Gene Pool was for balance purposes, as Hunting is harder since it involves two checks and Lifeforms can spend their DNA.  Also, I envision that eventually the income from proposals will taper off compared to other means of gaining DNA, which means that having other methods to increase the Gene Pool’s DNA (which I’m sure we can come up with) is probably the best way to maintain parity.

I do think that as long as we have Nourishment, we should utilize it.  Also, I think we should make Feeding less frequent for two reasons.  One, I think it’s safer if we make it a bit weaker, and then ramp it up as we see the effects on gameplay.  Two, it’s probably preferable to people to only have to Feed on a weekly basis (rather than having to log in every day and rolling a bunch of dice).

Anyone can go an eat grass. Foraging is supposed to be easier than hunting.

I think foraging should return 0 DNA points, only refill you nourishment a varied amount (perhaps 2 or 3?) but can only be done once per week.  That way, a smaller creature can survive by foraging, but larger creatures would need to suplement foraging with hunting.

I disagree. A creature shouldn’t have to hunt if e doesn’t want to.
