Enact a new rule, “The Grue”:-

The Grue is an entity that counts as a Runner for the purposes of all dynastic rules. If the Gridmaster is required to notify the Grue of any information, they may instead choose not to do so.

If the Grue’s Location is a blank string and the Watch Number is 10 or higher, the Gridmaster may set the Grue’s Location to a secretly random Dormant Cell and its Heading to a secretly random direction from either North, South, East or West.

Add a step to the start of the bullet list in “Running”:-

* If the Grue’s Location is in the same row or column as any other Runners (excluding those in the same Cell as it), change the Grue’s Heading to face a secretly random such Runner.

Add another step after “Blank every Runner’s Heading”:-

* Set the Grue’s Heading to a secretly random direction from either North, South, East or West.

It’s a reference to the ascension address. You’re welcome to submit proposals to the game if you would prefer other things to happen.

How do we resolve rules such as “At any time, a Runner may privately request a Glance around their current Location from the Gridmaster” and “If a Runner’s Location is set to a Cell whose value is Battery, the Gridmaster should notify them of this at their earliest convenience if they haven’t already.” when the Grue is a Runner? How does the Grue make such a request or receive said notification? Or is that being left unaddressed on purpose at the moment?

I’ve just sort of given up in a weird way, nothing I make ever passes, so why try?

The requests seem okay to leave unplugged, they just won’t happen. But good point, there’s already a “must privately inform” elsewhere in the ruleset for encountering other Runners, so the Grue will need an exception for that. I’ve added a clause to the first paragraph.

“ to face a secretly random such Runner”

what does this mean

The slightly awkward “secretly random” wording is using an Appendix definition, so that the Emperor doesn’t give away what dice they’ve rolled (or the fact that they’re rolling dice at all): “If a selection is explicitly specified as being “secretly” random, the Runner making this determination may do so using a private method of their choosing, instead of the Dice Roller.”

The intention is that if multiple Runners exist in the Grue’s column and/or row, to pick one such Runner at random, but in a secret manner.

Just to note that Dormant Cell is undefined terminology if Sweepminer doesn’t pass.
