Proposal: My Room My Rules

Timed Out. Passes 4-1—Clucky

Adminned at 23 Apr 2021 01:42:12 UTC

Add the following sub-rule to Nosy Researchers called “Influence”

Every AI has a publicly tracked value called Influence, which defaults to 0.

As a Conspicuous Action named Updating, an AI may spend 2 Influence to add or remove the Surveillance, Cyberspace, Datacenter, or Intel tag from their Server room.

Add the following step immediately after the “For each Conspicuous action in the Behavior Log whose Location has the Monitored or Surveillance tag, increment the associated AI’s Suspicion by 1.” step in the atomic action in “Nosy Researchers”

For each Conspicuous action in the Behavior Log whose Location is an AI’s server room and was not performed by that AI, increase that AI’s influence by 1

imperial Not sure this needs a new player variable added; Suspicion, Leeway or a new type of Data Store data could all do the job of Influence.

against we already have a fair few variables

@Kevan how so?

Suspicion is a poor resource to use for permanent upgrades, because people can just tank suspicion one for round and there server room wouldn’t be reset after they are.

Leeway doesn’t really seem to thematically fit what influence is going for at all. Don’t think we should reuse variables just for the sake of reusing variables.

New type of data doesn’t really seem to fit either, given the idea is that you can passively setup an intel or cyberspace location and then slowly make a profit off of other people using it. Trying to do something with data I think would get filled up too fast and suffocate the ability to use data for other things in that location

If the problem with using Suspicion is that the server room isn’t reset, we could reset server rooms.

Leeway seems thematically fine; if Researchers are taking a light-touch attitude to a particular AI, that gives it a foothold to manipulate its server room. Gaining Leeway for intrusions makes less sense, but we already have another way to gain it.

And as with Fungible Tokens, I think anything can become Data: instead of saying that a new number exists and needs its own column, say that an amount of a data type is the number. Same effect but it saves column space and immediately plugs into other mechanics.

Like I said, I think data would get filled up too fast if we did stuff that way. And I also think using data would likely just over complicate things.

one more column doesn’t seem like too much of a big deal to me.

so, u get influence from other AIs taking actions in yr own server room? that’s interesting, but thematically odd. i’m sort of on the fence about this one, and don’t see the theme of it very strongly, but i’ll vote for bc i think its worth exploring :0

i agree with kevan that i’d like to see more use of data rather than fully new variables tho, bc i think data stores are a v interesting mechanic :0
