Proposal: No Strings Attached

Quorum reached. Passes 8 - 0 due to ais being idle.—Clucky

Adminned at 01 Jun 2020 18:33:46 UTC

Add the following to “The Wheel” above the subrule “Points”

When a new Segment is created and does not specify a particular value for that segment, use the following default values for the unspecified values:

*Index: The smallest positive integer that is not already an Index
*Name: Roll five DICE6, concatenate the results into a five digit number, find the corresponding entry on this list pick word in that entry (with its first letter capitalized). Repeat this process until it generates a Name that is not already the Name of another Segment
*Payout:
*Global Effect:

Had this in another proposal that got shot down, but feel like this is still a useful part to have

against I prefer the random selection of the name to be made by the proposer, rather than the admin.

This is useful when discussing hypothetical new segments, because they have names already; the prison-segment proposal was hard to talk about because we don’t know what the segment would have been called.

It might also be useful for a future rule which allows players to place hypothetical non-segments into their Wagers, allowing them to become part of their Wager automatically if the proposal passes (which is probably the best option for new-segment timing issues).

Is it useful to have a random name? What if a bad word is randomly generated?

The Index and Name method of choosing a default value is interpreted as an instruction for how to choose the default value, whereas the payout and global effect are interpreted as the default value strings, yet there are no explicit instructions or formatting differences besides context telling us that. Could this cause any issue?

@ais not all segments have to be added by a proposal. you could have rules that add new segments automatically, that won’t always have a name

@Clucky: But we don’t have rules that add new segments automatically; and if we did have such a rule, it would probably want to specify a different default Payout or Global Effect from the ones listed here. So the rule would be specifying its own defaults as it is.

That sort of “hook for a hypothetical future rule” is sort-of like a protosal, but even worse, because we can’t judge it based on the context it will eventually get used in, and it clutters the ruleset even if the future rule never happens.

Isn’t it so much simpler to, the next time we write a rule that adds segments automatically (which is something that may well not occur all dynasty), place the segment naming algorithm in that rule?

This proposal is mostly about setting better defaults, though, right? Under the current ruleset if I propose “add a new Segment with a Payout of ais523 wins” (and people vote it through without noticing or caring that it fails to specify other values), it enters play with an Index of 1 and a Name of “A”.
