In “The Quarry”, change

Every hour the amount of Stone in the Quarry decreases by 1, to a minimum of zero; whenever any Engineer or City Architect would perform any action that would cause the amount of Stone to change they must first update its value to reflect any reduction due to the passage of time.

to

Erosion is an atomic action that decreases the amount of Stone in the Quarry by 24. Whenever any Engineer or City Architect would perform any action that would cause the amount of Stone to change, they must first perform the Erosion atomic action if it has been more than 24 hours since the last Erosion.

Set the amount of Stone in the Quarry to 650.

This continuous decrease thing seems like more work than needed, really.  I’m also worried that we’ll slowly drift off from the real value of Stone, so this also sets the amount of Stone in the Quarry to resolve any ambiguity.

The downside to this is that the original text required the Stone to decrease as other changes were made. Your replacement text says “may”, in which case all Engineers could choose to never perform the Daily Communal Action.

If that’s intention, that’s fine, but it would be good to know that you also meant to remove the enforcement aspect of decreasing Stone.

Correction: your replacement text says “can”, which still reads as an optional exercise of the action.

That’s not the case but I have no clue how to better word it

How about this?

Erosion is an atomic action that decreases the amount of Stone in the Quarry by 24. Whenever any Engineer or City Architect would perform any action that would cause the amount of Stone to change, they must first perform the Erosion atomic action if it has been more than 24 hours since the last Erosion.

I realize that if no one ever decreases the Stone in the Quarry, it will never erode over time, but that’s the same flaw that was already present in the existing rule, so it’s not making things any worse.

for since it seems unlikely that everyone has been applying the current version correctly, or will remember to do so in future.
