Scanning Errors

As pointed out in comments on What’s Mined Is Mine, Zyborg’s use of the Bone Scanner on Vertorite was invalid, as the ruleset at the time required them to “Update the Equipment rule to list the effect of that Equipment on that Thing”. They rolled a die and posted a blog entry, but didn’t update the Equipment rule, so the atomic action was unfinished. (The enactment of What’s Mined is Mine doesn’t change anything, as they still wouldn’t have got an Ingot because they didn’t complete the action.)

Cuddlebeam’s copying of the action later that day had no effect, because the rules don’t say that Vertorite produces Ingots.

This leaves us with both Zyborg and Cuddlebeam being halfway through the same atomic action - I think we’re waiting for Zyborg to “Update the Equipment rule to list the effect of that Equipment on that Discovery” and Cuddlebeam to “Randomly select an Effect (excluding “Unknown”), naming the Equipment and the Discovery in the die roll comment”. Neither player may take any other dynastic action until they’ve finished their atomic action.

Since “Each piece of Equipment has a single defined Effect against each Discovery” and Cuddlebeam has finished their action first, I guess this means Zyborg’s result will overwrite it.

I suspect this also applies to when I applied the Gamma Pistol on the Deltarite..  I didn’t update the Effect in the Equipment rule.  Can someone help me figure out how to proceed?  According to the current ruleset, I should be (among other things) first updating the effect in the “Equipment” rule, then giving myself a prestige (even though the ruleset was different at the time), then writing a story post.  Of those three things, I only did the story post;  I assume the best way to resolve this is to just do the first two things, and just leave my previous story post (since it won’t matter whether I redo a story post).

The critical question is: Should I be finishing the action according to the current ruleset (i.e. gaining a prestige), or according to the ruleset at the time when the action began (i.e. without gaining prestige)?

It’s an interesting situation, and I don’t think it’s come up before, which is surprising. Common sense would be that you always have to obey the current ruleset, even if that changes under your feet (the same way the rules might change between one daily action and the next), and “For the purposes of determining the ordering or legality of game actions, the time of an Atomic Action shall be the time that it is completed.” would seem to back that up.

So I’d say go back to the last valid step that you took of it, and take all the rest in order, as they are written now, and reusing the original dice rolls.
