Proposal: The Stonecrusher 5000

In the rule “The Quarry”, remove everything after the first sentence.

To the end of the “Move On” atomic action, add a step:-

* If the Quarry has at least as much Stone as five times the number of Engineers: give each Engineer 5 Stone and reduce the amount of Stone in the Quarry by five times the number of Engineers.

We’ve changed the compulsory hourly count to a compulsory daily check, but I suspect that people will still sometimes forget to do this, invalidating their actions. And the daily action DICE2 grind has already been flagged as “mostly pointless”.

So this keeps the finite Quarry, but simplifies its output to a single delivery for each new Building.

I think it’s mostly pointless because we haven’t been building. I like the randomness on the mining action and I like the <href a=https://blognomic.com/archive/local_213#comments >idea some time ago</href> there being some game state where not everyone can mine

We’re almost unanimously voting to invalidate all progress on the DICE2 mining action and just set everyone to the same 10 Stone, but we still want to carry on rolling DICE2 every day after that?

I guess at a certain point we might as well just give everyone an infinite amount of conceptual stone and make Stone the same as Wood.

Stone seems interesting as a rarer, heavier resource which can significantly shore up or unbalance the tower. It’s just the way we gain it that I think could use an overhaul.

The rule right now is that to gain Stone you have to check the wiki history to see if anyone has Eroded the Quarry recently (bearing in mind they might have done so without mentioning it in the edit summary), then Erode the Quarry if they haven’t, then roll DICE2 to see how much Stone you get. If you get the first part wrong then your Mining is invalid, and you yourself acknowledge that this effort is better avoided. And if you forget to take the action every single day of the dynasty, or happen to roll lower dice than your opponents, them’s the breaks.

Sure, I don’t disagree that the current situation is broken. I just don’t think that a piecemeal, salami-slicing repeal is the right approach to fixing it, when a full rethink could do better.

I mean, this proposal is tantamount to “divide the current amount of stone by the number of players, rounded down; give each player that amount of Stone and set that amount as the default amount of Stone for new players”. Why skip the step?

Not sure if limiting Stone to a certain amount per player per Building is better or worse than giving it out all in one go - it’s probably more interesting that someone might run out of Stone within an individual round.
