Call for Judgment: Uploading icons was illegal

10-2 is Quorum. Enacted. -coppro

Adminned at 09 Jul 2011 22:03:27 UTC

Insert the following at the end of the second paragraph of the rule ‘Icons’, and update the game state to what it would be if that change had been in effect since the passing of the proposal ‘Stand here’

Any Gladiator may upload new Icons at any time.

Is this really necessary? The wiki isn’t gamestate so uploading them isn’t illegal.

Images named “IconSomething.png” are, since the ruleset regulates their alteration.

But uploading them isn’t restricted by the rules. Uploading an icon is a necessary precursor to selecting it on the wiki. I don’t see a problem with people being able to change their icons. So what’s the problem?

[Anduril] The problem is that Icons are gamestate (because “the Ruleset regulates the alteration of” them), and “Gamestate can only be altered in manners specified by the Ruleset”. We require a legal way for new Icons to be created, even if it’s something as sweeping as this.

@Kevan - But the icons only actually become gamestate when they are selected to be icons - prior to that they are just images on the wiki.

My problem with this is that we frequently have wiki pages that become gamestate, but we have never once has a rule that permitted us to actually have a wiki. Requiring us to have created by hand everything that then later becomes gamestate is onerous.

against If I understand this correctly, the definition of Gamestate (“the Rukeset regulates the alteration of”) doesn’t apply to icons.

Yes, the Rules regulates the assignment of Icons and some such, but not the alteration of them, does it? *checks*

Well, it actually does: “The Announcer may change the image of any Icon at any time.” Kind off. If the Ruleset specifically allows something for someone, does that automagically mean that it is forbidden to do for anyone else?!?

If yes, I will go find things that were unallowed. There will be such things. I am pretty certain.

mmmh. mideg, I don’t agree with your point, since allowing someone to change something is regulationg the alteration. And since regulating the alteration of something makes it gamestate, it forbids the alterations from thirds.

I don’t agree with Josh either, since An Icon is any wiki image which measures 80 pixels by 80 pixels, and whose filename is either “IconXxxx.png”, “IconXxxx.gif” or “IconXxxx.jpg””, so, they have been just images, but now they’re all Icons.

Oh, and I think “wiki image” is ambiguous, but I’m probably just being paranoid.

So for

“update the game state to what it would be if that change had been in effect since the passing of the proposal ‘Stand here’ “
Isn’t this abusable? Let’s say that a Gladiator w/o Icon says “well, if I had an Icon, I woulf have fighted, done this and that and I would have earned 5 frags. MMhh.

@Ely: No, because nobody will believe them (since they neither complained about the broken rule nor treated it as being valid), and will CfJ it down.
