In “Gamestate Tracking”, replace “Actions that change gamestate directly (defined in other rules) can normally be performed simply by applying their effects to the GNDT, which updates the gamestate accordingly, unless another rule specifies some other method of performing them; one GNDT update may contain one or more actions, or one action may be split over multiple GNDT updates, as long as it’s clear what is happening and the actions are otherwise legal.” with:-

For gamestate which is tracked in a specific place (such as the GNDT or a wiki page), any alteration of that gamestate is (and can only be) applied by editing that data in that place. One GNDT or wiki update may contain one or more alterations, or one alteration may be split over multiple updates, as long as it is clear what is happening and the alterations are otherwise legal.

Set the Location and Remedies of Kevan, Quick, Matt, Viv, pokes and Cuddlebeam to be equal to the following values:

  • Kevan: Town Square, carrying Nightshade, Well water, Leeches
  • Quirck: Home, carrying Red cap
  • Matt: Town Square, carrying Well water, Mandrake
  • Viv: Forest, carrying Red cap
  • pokes: Surgery, carrying Salt, Silver Bark, Leeches
  • Cuddlebeam: Town Square, carrying Well water, Well water, Well water

Enact a new rule, “Epidemiology”:-

At any time, the Doctor may set the Symptoms, Diseases and Memento Mori of each Villager to match the values he was privately tracking for them immediately prior to the CfJ that enacted this rule (with the restriction that no Villager may have a visible Symptom) and then repeal this rule.

As Cuddlebeam touched on in this proposal before self-killing it, the casual appendix wording that GNDT gamestate edits “can normally be performed simply by applying their effects to the GNDT” implies that it might be legal to perform “abnormal” gamestate edits without updating the GNDT at all. Let’s fix this by saying that data tracked in the GNDT can only be altered by updating the GNDT.

The gamestate cleanup isn’t perfect here, as it will undo any GNDT-changing actions taken during this CfJ, but it’s entirely clear and unambiguous, which seems the main thing. (“Epidemiology” is a bit of a hack and relies on the players trusting the Doctor to clean things up fairly; if you think you can’t and have a better idea for how to set secret variables to what they “should” be, by all means submit a follow-up proposal. I’ve stopped short of being allowed to kill everyone, at least.)

Note: I took GNDT actions between when the CfJ was submitted and when I saw the CfJ.

Alright, I’ll let that stand and update the CfJ. Let’s get this voted through now, though.

Note: The first rule change inherently makes ‘automagic’ changes to tracked gamestate impossible.

[Bucky] Hmm, good point. (“Automagic” refers to “at midnight, every player gains 1 point” type rules which modify a GNDT variable even if nobody actually updates it.)

Making these kinds of rules illegal would be no bad thing if handled properly, but there are maybe some small gaps in the current ruleset - “all Villagers Near to them who already had the Black Death gain one Memento Mori” is clearly a knock-on effect of the Doctor taking an action, and implies that the Doctor also updates this. But doesn’t actually say that. I’ll throw out a follow-up CfJ to lean it back towards actions rather than alterations.
