Proposal: A Wizard is Never Late

Timed out, 2-1 with 3 DEFs. Enacted by JonathanDark.

In “Engaging in a Duel”, remove the paragraph:-

If a duel has been open for 72 hours, any Wizard participating in that duel who has not selected a spell for that duel is considered to have selected to cast Fizzle for that duel.

This recent change feels like it’s shifted the game from a constant pressure “the whole group is waiting for you to submit your orders” to a much more relaxed “it’s okay to keep everyone waiting for 71 hours”.

I think it was working okay before. I’m not convinced that the spectres of “but what if somebody stops playing” and “but what if a player tactically refuses to submit orders” are really there, they’ll both dissolve under a little social pressure and the awareness that a proposal or CfJ could be made to clear the blockage.

I’m not convinced the change has done much in that regard. The people not moving feel like they’ve done it because they’ve forgotten rather than anything tactical

@Kevan: If it’s constant pressure you want, I don’t know that removing the paragraph would be enough to generate that. Would you be open to adding a progress bar a la The Grid Dynasty as a social pressure mechanism? That way, it’s not just up to the Battle Master to poke people, but any Wizard can point to the progress bar or appropriate fantasy equivalent and remind people to get their spell selection in.

I meant to add that it makes social pressure a little easier when you can say that a majority of Wizards have done their duty and if we could just get those last few in, the next duel can begin.

[Clucky] That’s the thing: I think the rule is probably encouraging everyone to take a more relaxed and forgetful stance on submitting orders.

If you set players a formal deadline then to some extent we’ll think of that as the time we’ve got.

And if you have a rule that automatically handles players who forget to submit orders, that makes it socially okay to forget to submit orders.

[Jonathan] I thought our existing system - that after about 24 hours, the Battle Master names the outstanding players on Discord and reminds them to get their orders in - was working fine.

I’m not sure where you came up with the 24-hour number, but the rules state that the Battle Master may name the outstanding players, but doesn’t give any guideline as to when that happens. If you want to add a “every 24 hours since the last Duel was resolved” to that, I’d be happy with that as well.

“about 24 hours” was just my personal perception of how long I thought Clucky was generally waiting before nudging people, I might be wrong about that.

The latest message from Snisbo (sorry, not meaning to pick on you!) in Discord illuminates perhaps the real issue: some people aren’t aware of when the Duel is actually resolved. It’s also not the first time someone mentioned that they lost track of when the previous Duel ended, so maybe we’ve been focusing on the wrong part of this anyway.
