Proposal: [Building Blocks] The Pace of Play

Add a rule named “Pacing” to the Building Blocks wiki page with the following text, replacing every instance of “Trucks” with the plural form of the current synonym for Player as defined in the rule “Synonyms”:

In this dynasty, there is a number called Pacing Interval that is publicly tracked in the ruleset. Trucks are expected to perform at least one dynastic action between every instance of the Pacing Interval starting with the first instance, and there is no expectation for the ruleset to be fair to Trucks that are unable to keep up with this pace.

The first instance of the Pacing Interval is not considered to have begun until a date and time for that instance has been specified in a dynastic rule. The Pacing Interval is 48 hours unless otherwise specified by a dynastic rule.

Similar in tone to “No Cooperation”, in that it’s not strictly enforceable, but sets an expectation for dynastic play. I’m not yet getting into what type of Building Block this is. We should cover “types” in another Proposal.

Don’t think “{{player}}” is properly defined

It’s a wiki template that resolves to the current synonym for “player”. I’m just following that template pattern for now.

actually its currently a wiki template that resolves to “JonathanDark” (given the https://wiki.blognomic.com/index.php?title=Template:Player is not defined as gamestate anywhere, and thus anyone can edit it)

“All wiki pages that the rules and Building Blocks explicitly mention [...] and any images or Templates contained within [...] those Wiki Pages are assumed to be Gamestate.”

Well, to avoid sabotaging this idea with a side issue, I’ll put in the current synonym, with instructions to change it as appropriate.

(I’ve rolled back Clucky changing the {{player}} template’s output from “Truck” to “JonathanDark”.)

Dubious.

All wiki pages that the rules and Building Blocks explicitly mention (except for the FAQ, the dynastic histories and discussion pages) and any images or Templates contained within (or indirectly invoked by Templates contained within) those Wiki Pages are assumed to be Gamestate.

The ruleset was directly edited to include that template, which, if legal, makes the template gamestate.

The justification for directly putting them into the ruleset was:

does not change the wording of the ruleset; and just change the formatting

That would be covered by

may change the layout or design of a gamestate wiki page if doing so would not change how any rules interpreted its content.

Which is interesting, and may hold up, but has a whole mess of unintended problems, such as: is the emperor allowed to change that template upon ascension?

But there aren’t any rules using the template so it currently isn’t gamestate

Probably best to change the template back to the original text synonyms for Player and Emperor, as tempting as it is to have what feels like a “clean” substitution. It doesn’t solve unusual English plurals (which is solvable via a template but with more work required).

And if you want to argue that someone adding the template to the ruleset makes it gamestate, someone passing the old brain of this could remove the template from the ruleset (which if adding the template is legal, removing the template is also legal), change the template to whatever text injection they want, and get full control of the game

Good point. I’ve reverted the ruleset and Building Blocks to the synonym text rather than the introduced templates.

Anyway, it’s an against from me, as I think that this has about as much heft and visibility as the community guidelines so is verbiage to no purpose. I also think that game design problems should have game design solutions, and would prefer to see games designed that incentivised cadence rather than attempting to corral “desirable” behaviour using blunt-force social pressures.

for This being a Building Block means that it isn’t required, so we can simply remove it in a few Dynasties if it isn’t used or if it doesn’t work as intended. No harm in trying it out!
