Proposal: Death Be Not Proud

Reword the sentence in the rule “Tricks” that reads “If a Player’s Pocket contains a Death, neither the Player or their Opponent may score any points from Tricks” to read

If a Player’s Pocket contains a Death, and their Opponent’s Pocket contains no Ace cards, then neither the Player or their Opponent may score any points from Tricks

Locking down the game for nearly half its duration at a time of your choosing is just too powerful, even without the Arlecchino combo. This nerf allows it to be countered, at a possible cost to your plans.

Not sure this is really the greatest nerf. Aces are very hard to score with, except when scoring Il Vermes, and you can’t score Il Verme if you have an Ace and the other player has death. If anything, this will just allow the death player to score Il Verme while the other player is shut out.

Maybe instead we could limit the shutdown effect of death to only counter the next play?

I considered that, Clucky, but I wanted to try and retain the “if a player’s pocket contains X” framing that is consistent for all the other arcana if possible.

for too much of a nerf tbh but still better

I personally don’t even think its a nerf. will likely result in more games where the death player wins because they can Il Verme due to playing death after their opponent played an Ace (due to having to play an Ace) than lose because their opponent still finds a way to score with the Ace in their pocket.

for Agree that the nerf can be made chunkier but also agree that making death shorter feels like an uninspired response to the prompt.
