Add a new rule entitled Estate Agents:

Each Realtor has a publicly tracked Charisma skill, which may have any integer value between 1 and 20 inclusive, defaulting to 1. If a Realtor’s charisma is 1, and they have not yet done so, they may change their charisma score by rolling 4DICE4 and setting its value to the result.

If you roll 4DICE4 the maximum value you can get is 16, is that intentional?

4DICE4 seems a bit swingy. But that might not be a terrible thing. Guess it depends on how powerful we make Charisma.

4d4 is going to almost always produce something between 8-12, with possibly one or two people who manage to score a 5 or a 15. I don’t really like this being a one-time roll that might screw someone for the rest of the dynasty.

I just think asymmetry in starting positions can be a positive as it kind of pushes people towards different strategies, so not everyone has the same interests with every proposal. Can be more dynamic. But then I play a lot of games with imbalanced starts and I relish a challenge, though I understand not everyone is like that. We don’t necessarily need to make everything hinge on this one stat either. I’m just thinking it’s a thematically suitable mechanic that leaves open the possibility of later development once we get a better sense of what other mechanics are gonna be.

But yes @zack, it’s intentional. I thought it would be interesting to leave open the possibility of increasing (or decreasing!) Charisma by various means if people want to go in that direction.

Also I picked 4d4 because it’s pretty well clustered around the centre while still leaving juust enough risk to give it some stakes. A lot of the RPGs I’ve played gen stats with 3d6 or something similar but I thought this was a bit less punishing.

Open to suggestions if people feel strongly about it tho!

I also agree with redtara and like asymmetric starts. Maybe less charisma makes one better at night actions!

FWIW there’s roughly a 75% chance that not one of us one will roll a 4 or 5.

Agree with Brendan, as this isn’t a “start” stat, it’s an at-any-time action which latecomers, inactive players and That One Player Who Refuses To Set Their Charisma will still be able to surprise us with. But it’s early days.
