Proposal: Pangaea Is Dumb

Times out 10-6 -Darthrs

Delete the text in “Universe” that reads as follows:

The pangea super landmass has reformed, removing the Alantic Ocean except for around the Florida area and many Alantic isles. All islands still exist.

As if moving around the world wasn’t daunting enough… now we have to figure out the new distances between places based on how Pangaea is formed? Blech.

While I don’t disagree with your premise that the Pangaea situation is a bit daunting, I vote against as this isn’t a rule change.  Maybe more appropriate as a CfJ?  What do the more experienced players feel about this?

Proposals change ruleset or gamestate.

Idle AGAINST. It’s a legitimate proposal. I just think that Pangaea is not dumb.

You’re right… it is a legitimate gamestate change.  I still vote against though.  I still feel it was legitimate from a gameplay perspective too, annoying though it may be—just as it would be in keeping with the feel of the game by making a wish for the process to be reversed.

If the Djinn felt it was suitable enough to grant, isn’t it taking away from the purpose of even having wishes if they’re just repealed as soon as they’re in effect?  Especially considering it was this same wish that has effectively freed everyone in the South Pole?  Wouldn’t this essentially discourage any kind of wish that didn’t just benefit everyone as a whole?

Just my two cents, anyways.  Sorry for being wordy ;)

It’s good to explain your vote. Don’t be sorry.

for I don’t have a problem with consensus proposals being used to override unhelpful wishes, given that we can’t “just wish to undo it” until we find the Lamp, and have to do a lot of moving around to find it.

This isn’t a wish that “doesn’t benefit everyone as a whole”. Almost every wish made so far fits in that category, and none of those have had proposals attempting to undo them. This is a wish that has a major detrimental effect on the game as a whole, since no one can calculate intercontinental distances anymore. If we argued precedent, I might vote against on Aqua’s argument, but we usually operate on a case-by-case basis, and I don’t foresee wishes being constantly challenged by proposal.

Also, the South Pole has at no point been prison, guys. Lines of longitude and latitude (with the sole exception of the Prime Meridian) are still valid locations, and Operation Deep Freeze provides a way out for people who don’t want to exploit the definition of Location.

Is wishing even possible at the moment? I thought the Djinn was still in his Lamp…

While I am in favor of the idea, I think that it breaks the wish mechanic to have the metagaming process of proposals used to undo in-game wishes.

As I read it (although it’s quite hard to follow) the “wishes which contain more than one part” wish exception means that it won’t always be possible to undo a single wish by making a counter-wish. If I wish for everyone to be teleported to the North or South Pole at random, a wish to return them in a fair way would have “more than one part”.

(In fact, “wishes to undo any game action” are explicitly illegal anyway.)

Well, Kevan, it’s not really undoing anything. It’s “Setting it back to the way it is in real life”.

Darknight, if you want to get rid of pangaea, just grant a boon to someone who voted “for”. :)
