Proposal: The Jitters

Timed out 4 votes to 13. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 07 Mar 2010 01:46:13 UTC

Enact a new subrule of Rule 2.1 “Commoner’s Economy” entitled “Caffeinated” which reads as follows:

As a weekly action, a Commoner may decrease their amount of Caffeine by 5 in order to gain the quality “Caffeinated”.  A Caffeinated Commoner may choose at any time to stop being Caffeinated and gain an extra 10 Coal during their next Scavenge.  If any actions are prohibited to a Commoner because of Night, a Caffeinated Commoner may perform them if they are not otherwise prohibited.  A Caffeinated Commoner cannot take any action which would cause them to Sleep, nor can any other Commoner’s action cause them to Sleep.

To allow a use for caffeine in the rules and potentially open up other ways in which the rules could be expanded to use Night or Sleep mechanics.

Like this, but I’m paranoid of the undefined terms “Night” and “Sleep”.

If they are never defined, then, as worded, I don’t think their particular clauses can affect gameplay in any way.  The potential holes will come when a rule actually defining Sleep or Night occurs.

Though collectible Card Game makers have been using this for years to “Foresee” future addon packs, or cards.

@Ienpw,tecslicer: They don’t mean nothing just because they’re undefined. If they’re undefined they take on the normal English definition of the word.

against They don’t really seem to mean very much. I don’t really like undefineds.

The whole point was to inspire someone else to continue shaping these rules along a more well defined trajectory.  When iron, wood, and other resources were first created, they were worthless and undefined in their effects, too.  Now inventions have been made to use them.  Caffeine is still useless.  If you’re not willing to vote for this proposal, propose something of your own that uses caffeine.

Huh. Until we define Night and Sleep, this isn’t that interesting.

For what it’s worth, if something has an ongoing effect like this (particularly an effect which could potentially last for weeks), we should explicitly track that somewhere - such as the GNDT or a wiki page - rather than relying on players to remember it.

against The undefinedness is not that much of a problem, but we did day/night last dynasty, and it’s nice to have a change.

What? I have not voted in this Proposal?

for per Josh. Unlike him, I think it’s good that the trade is bad. So this is useless until “Night” becomes more important.
