Proposal: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Add the following to the ruleset as a new rule immediately after the rule entitled “Spells” and its subrules, entitled Explosive Language:

Explosive Latin is the language of spellcasting. Whenever a Student casts a Spell, they must roll DICE10 in the GNDT and add the Spell Power that student has in LAT to the result. If the result is a 1, 2 or 3 then an accident occurs.

If an accident occurs, the spell fails but the Student does not have to decrement their Grade. Instead they may increment their grade in LAT and, if they are Alive, set their Condition to either Zombie or Ghost (their choice).

Explosive Latin should be a bit more explosive.

against Negative Spell Power could pull the result below 1.

Purplebeard: I would argue that the first bullet point of 3.2.1 prevents that.

[Purplebeard] That would only be a problem if it reduced a roll of 10 below a 3. If you have a D or lower in Explosive Latin, the chance of an accident is a constant 30%.

I get that, but I assumed that the intention was that negative Spell Power increased the chance of an accident.

If this wasn’t the case, it’s still a bit unintuitive that Students with an F in LAT fail the check on a result of 6, 7 or 8.

for It’s a bit unintuitive, but we can clean it up later.

against The problem is with students having no grade in LAT. They can cast other spells, but have no defined spell power in LAT.

Good point Blacky, although it’s a pretty straightforward thing to fix.

NB, Roujo seems to have voted twice on this.

for CoV, as it really can be fixed easily ;-) (I’m not concerned about neg. spell power.)

From the Ruleset: “Ungraded Grades give no Spell Power.”  I think that’s a pretty straightforward 0 for the purposes of addition.  for

@Brendan: Wait a minute… So right now I would be better off not having studied a subject at all than having a D or worse in it? =P
