Proposal: Admin Protection

Self-Killed. -RaichuKFM

Adminned at 27 Feb 2013 14:51:37 UTC

Amend rule 1.5 by replacing:

Whenever an Admin resolves a Votable Matter, they must also mark their name, and report the final tally of Votes (or the fact that it was self-killed or vetoed).

with

Whenever an Admin Resolves a Votable Matter, they must mark their name and the final tally of Votes (or the fact that it was self-killed or vetoed) in the Admin field of the post. If it was not self-killed or vetoed, the Admin must also mark whether it was Enacted or Failed. If the Admin fails to do so, or includes incorrect information, then the resolution is invalid.

Make it clear that if an admin resolves a Votable Matter incorrectly, it doesn’t accidentally resolve the other way without anyone noticing.

against Making the process of administrating proposals more formulaic will increase the resistance to doing it, which will slow an already show queue further. Trusting the admins is the best way to get the job done; this is not a problem that arises often enough that it justifies the measure.

for This really wouldn’t discourage me from Adminning as I’m a formulaic person anyway, but I don’t know about anyone else.

I’m perhaps missing some recent context, but I don’t see how this amendment addresses the flavour text. If an admin mistakenly enacts a proposal that should have failed, but nobody notices, then under this new rule we still have a rule that shouldn’t be there, a proposal that accidentally resolved the wrong way without anyone noticing.

And tying the formulaic admin wording to the legality of the entire resolution just makes this more dangerous. If I enact a 7-5 proposal but mistakenly tally it as 8-5 in my admin comment, then the proposal remains secretly unresolved until somebody notices. (And if I wanted to be malicious, I’d enact a proposal I didn’t like using a subtly illegal admin comment, and pull a surprise “rule 2.6 was never enacted” reveal to crush some plan or other, weeks later.)
