Proposal: Ask Not For Whom The Organ Bwaaaaaaaabs

Antiquorate, 3-5. Josh

Adminned at 24 Jul 2021 07:05:22 UTC

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, as a second paragraph, add the following:

As a Daily Action, Richardo von Nestor may Test his Resolve. When Richardo von Nestor Tests his Resolve, he publicly rolls DICE5+x, where x is the number of full 24 hour periods that have elapsed since the last time he Entered the Crypt. If the result is equal to or higher than 5 then the Organ is Playing, and the next time the Crypt Awakens he may add 3 to his Energy.

Add the following to the beginning of the same rule:

The Organ is publicly tracked and may be either Playing or Not Playing. Unless a rule has specifically made the Organ be Playing, it is Not Playing. Whenever the Crypt Settles, set the Organ to Not Playing.

Remove the text “Otherwise the Organ is not playing” from the same rule.

Torn between making x be the number of days and making x be the number of VLs with 3 or fewer Puissance at the time of rolling…

This doesn’t work: the Organ’s playing status is not a variable you can change, rather it’s defined in terms of other variables.

You would need to revert “Player Piano” for the ruletext that this adds to make sense.

against now that this is too late to edit: it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do.

@ais What are you basing that on?

@Josh: “If it has been at least 24 hours since the Crypt was last entered, and at least 12 hours since the last Power Action was taken, and there are no pending calls for judgement which have the tag “[Pressing]”, then the Organ is Playing. Otherwise the Organ is not playing.”

You can’t just “set the Organ to Playing”, it isn’t a variable, it’s a status that’s calculated based on other things thus it can’t be set.

It’s like saying “as a Daily Action, any player may set Quorum to 6”. What would that action even do if you did it? Unidle a random player?

Have you, ah

Have you read the proposal

“Remove the text “Otherwise the Organ is not playing” from the same rule”, for example

Or “The Organ is publicly tracked and may be either Playing or Not Playing. Unless a rule has specifically made the Organ be Playing, it is Not Playing”

Oh, I see – this is removing the Organ calculation entirely (I initially assumed that this would be a “shortcut” that cut the current calculation short). I don’t think the proposal did that originally, so you must have edited it and I missed the edit.

This does potentially lead to a situation in which nobody wants to (or can) act but the timer is being bumped repeatedly.

Also, isn’t “the next time the Crypt Awakens he may add 3 to his Energy” an untracked variable? At least, I don’t see how this is being tracked (although I’m not 100% certain it’s a variable – it might just do nothing instead). I guess you could just add 3 unconditionally because there’s no other way for the Organ to start playing. (It probably shouldn’t be a “may”, though; I can’t see any good reason for the starting energy to be up to Emperor discretion.)

Richardo’s whim makes what’s been a very solemnly dice-based dynasty suddenly very gamesmastery - would you DICE5+0 immediately after a timed out run, or never do this, would you interrupt a player or never do so, would you give everyone a fair chance to make a move in response to each run, etc.

This also splits the game along timezones: US players will always get a guaranteed quiet night for their moves, while UK players are more likely to get the last word.

against

Maybe it’s resolvable by secretly picking an Organ timeout in advance (“03:28am Friday”) at the end of each run, and whenever you’re awake and the clock is past that, the Crypt gets rewound to that moment and Richardo enters it.

[ais] The 12-hour-timeout Organ calculation is still there, this rule is only removing “Otherwise the Organ is not playing”.

@Kevan How would it feel making it a communal action that any VL could take?

Testing Resolve as a Communal Daily Action would likely amount to “at midnight”, with people rushing to lock in actions at 11:59.

for i think w/ DICE5 trying to hit 5 it’s a little too likely to have it happen right away, but i want to see a change like this bc ppl keep waiting so long to do everything!
