Proposal: Going Aboard

Enact a new rule, “Positions”:-

Each Sailor holds a Position on the whaling ship Haniver, tracked in the GNDT and taken from the following list, defaulting to Deckhand (which may be tracked as “-”).

  • Captain
  • Chief Mate
  • Second Mate
  • Third Mate
  • Cook
  • Blacksmith
  • Carpenter
  • Steward
  • Harpooneer
  • Deckhand
  • Passenger

A Sailor may assign themselves a free Position other than Captain, at any time. (A Position is free if it is held by no Sailor, or if the Position is Harpooneer or Deckhand.)

The Captain may change any Sailor’s Position at any time.

Only the Narrator may hold the Position of Passenger.

If a blog entry exists which is less than 48 hours old and which features comments from the Chief, Second and Third Mate all including the phrase “I serve X”, where X is the name of the same Sailor, then any Sailor may make the named Sailor the Captain. (If there is an existing Captain when this happens, that Captain becomes a Deckhand.)

There are a few tweaks I’d like to make, but they are just that: tweaks. Particularly I’d like to limit the number of harpooners to three.

The sentence “The Captain may change any Sailor’s Position at any time.” is slightly too vague to my taste, since it doesn’t specify what the Captain may change the Position to.

I disagree, there is no ambiguity. It is what it is. The “free Position” restriction is only for self-assignment.

And the Captain can assign however they want.

(I agree with that we’d intuitively expect some sort of continuation of the pattern, which could be the reason why you find it slightly out of taste, but the instructions as to how this mechanic work are clear.)

Yes, I wrote that backwards and added the “free Positions” limitation later on - it’d certainly be worth adding it to the Captain assignments as well. But it doesn’t break anything for now, if the Captain decides that the Haniver should be crewed by eleven Cooks.
