Proposal: I am Lord Marvolo

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 11:06:02 UTC

Add a new rule, entitled Ascendancy:

Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany goes through cycles of Light Ascendancy, when the Headmaster and Alive Students have the upper hand, and Dark Ascendancy, where Lord Marvolo and the Zombie Students are more powerful. The School is currently in a time of Light Ascendancy; if there is a rule entitled Dark Ascendancy, it and all of its sub-rules have no effect.

Add a new teacher to the Teachers list, called Lord Marvolo. His field is set to Unbridled Evil, his condition is Zombie, his Pet is set to “All Zombie students” and his Grudge is set to “All Alive students”.

Add a new sub-rule to rule 2.6, entitled Lord Marvolo:

Lord Marvolo is a Teacher. Lord Marvolo’s Grudges and Pets are not affected by any rule except this one. Lord Marvolo always has a Grudge against all Students whose condition is Alive. All Students who are Zombies are always Lord Marvolo’s Pet.

As a weekly action, and only if no other Student has done so within the preceding five days, a Zombie Student may Channel Lord Marvolo by making a post entitled “Channelling Lord Marvolo”. That Student is then considered to be Lord Marvolo until they either cease to be a Zombie or another Student performs the same action.

Add the following to the end of rule 2.4:

Unbridled Evil is also a subject, but Students may never possess a grade in it.

Add the following as a sub-rule to rule 2.5, entitled Lessons in Evil:

As a weekly action, Lord Marvolo may call an Evil Lesson, by posting a blog entry with the subject “Evil Lesson: Unbridled Evil with Lord Malvolo”. If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not on Detention, that Student may choose to Study or Disrupt the lesson; however, students who are Alive may not study the lesson, and Students who are Zombies may not disrupt the lesson.

If the number of Students who Study an Evil Lesson is strictly greater than the number of Students who Disrupt it then any Student may change the last sentence of the rule entitled “Ascendancy” to read:

The School is currently in a time of Dark Ascendancy.

Add a new rule, entitled Dark Ascendancy:

Any Student may, at any time, chance all instances of the phrase “the Headmaster” in the ruleset to “Lord Malvolo” with an asterisk after it, except in this rule or subrules to this rule.

Add a subrule to this rule, entitled Return of the Light:

If ever a Student successfully returns the School to a state of Light Ascendancy, that Student must replace all instances of the phrase “Lord Malvolo” that have an asterisk after it with “the Headmaster”. They must then change the last sentence of the rule entitled “Ascendancy” to read:

The School is currently in a time of Light Ascendancy; if there is a rule entitled Dark Ascendancy, it and all of its sub-rules have no effect.

against I don’t like the part where you change all instances of “The Headmaster” with “Lord Marvolo*”.

Maybe you could create a professor named “Professor Abalone”, and during Light Ascendancy the Headmaster will represent Professor Abalone, and during Dark Ascendancy the Headmaster will represent Lord Marvolo.

Also, a teacher can’t have more than one pet. “All zombie Student” is not valid.

Oh, and I forgot to say: I love the general idea. Correct the few flaws and I will definitely vote for.

against Having a Zombie player with full Veto power is a bit… intense, but the thing that bothers me the most is that, as Lord Marvolo, that player will be able to see the whole Nomich ruleset - giving a huge advantage to his house once the Ruleset gets new rules. Sure, every house could use this advantage by switching every 5 days, but it kind of ruins the whole secret ruleset thing. Plus, if one house keeps sniping the Lord Marvolo channeling, they are effectively overpowered just because they were on at the time the channeling expired, which is a form of grinding IMO.

against Per Greytyphoon and Roujo, though I do like the core of the idea.

Yeah, me too. It’s just the powers associated with Lord Marvolo that I find overpowered.

I will almost certainly not repropose this if it fails. Anyone else is welcome to have a crack, though.

Ruojo - wouldn’t your objection be dealt with by a one-line fix? “Add ‘, and the rule entitled Nomich’ to the end of the rule entitled ‘Dark Ascendancy’.” Done. I hear your objection - it’s one I missed rather than being an intended consequence. But given that there’s no way that any of this is going to have an effect in the next week it seems easier to pass and fix than get into the reproposal grind over.

Greytyphoon - re. Pets - “Lord Marvolo’s Grudges and Pets are not affected by any rule except this one.” That makes this proposal supercede the existing rule on pets.

Also: “If the number of Students who Study an Evil Lesson is strictly greater than the number of Students who Disrupt it” can be triggered at any point, so a single Zombie could become Headmaster within ten seconds of this enacting. And it seems a very bad idea to give veto power to Lord Marvolo before enacting a way to restore Light Ascendancy…

The basic idea is great, though.

Ah, that’s a good point Kevan.

That was also why I didn’t want it to pass. Sure, some rules are better off passed and then fixed before something wrong can happen, but this could have been used right away. I didn’t foresee the “Veto any way to restore light ascendancy” part, though. That would have been bad. =P

against Greater minds than mine have already pointed out the concerns I would find the most significant. I would like to say, though, that I also like the idea behind this.
