Proposal: Patience is not a virtue

Withdrawn. Failed by JonathanDark.

If the proposal “Marvellous Mollusks” didn’t pass, this proposal has no effect.

Add the following as the second to last step of Award Ceremony:

Calculate the Race Duration as the difference in time between the creation of the Ongoing Race and the last Move made in that Race. Increase the Fame of the Snail who first passed the Finish Line by 1 for each 3 hours in the Race Duration.

In the rule The Award Ceremony, in each instance of the text “get N Fame”, where N is some number, replace N by the same number multiplied by ten.

Trying to encourage moving.
The idea here is that most of the time, you are more likely to not be the first than to be the first, so waiting is probably just going to reward someone else.
And even if you have a clear lead, waiting to increase your reward is always risky.

Oddly enough, this might do the opposite of what you intended. Although it seems to encourage movement to be the first to cross the finish line, there’s an optimal play to ensure that the Race Duration is as long as possible, thus delaying your move until someone else moves, and then following up with a flurry might have a better payoff.

I’d dangle a bigger carrot for finishing the race sooner, and make it decreasing Fame the longer you take to get across the Finish Line.

Hmm. But is the play actually that optimal? With Speed Limit, it doesn’t seem very easy to find a flurry of moves that would make you finish, especially early in the race

That’s true, I didn’t consider the Speed Limit restrictions. I’ve been expecting someone to lift those by now, but it hasn’t happened. Maybe this will work after all?

Maybe make “race duration” just the time it takes between when you first cross and when the race ends?

against per JD, I think that this will actually just encourage waiting more. I also think being rewarded for taking a long time to finish first just isn’t very race-like, even if it does have its intended effect.

against Seems like a flat bonus for crossing the line chronologically first would be enough. Scoring more per hour just gives that player an incentive to slow the game down once they’ve crossed it - whether that’s asking an accomplice to delay their remaining moves for as long as possible, or slowing the broader Nomic game down by dragging out discussion on any CfJs that arise.

I’m going to try some other ideas for encouraging Moving.
