Proposal: The Golden Snitch

Times out and passes, 9-1.—Brendan

Adminned at 13 Nov 2010 07:47:35 UTC

Add a new sub-rule to rule 2.6, entitled Snitching:

As a weekly action, a Student may Snitch by PMing the Headmaster with the name of a lesson that has not ended and the name of a student who they suspect will attempt to disrupt that lesson. If the named student subsequently does disrupt that lesson, then the Snitching student becomes the Teacher’s Pet of the teacher of the affected lesson, and the disruptive student gets Detention.

If two or more Students Snitch on the same student for the same class, then the one who Snitched first gets to be Teacher’s Pet.

If the majority of EVCs on this proposal contain the phrase “Build a better mousetrap”, the remainder of this proposal does nothing. Otherwise, add a new rule to the ruleset entitled Detention:

A student is considered to be in Detention for exactly one week from the moment of the action that caused them to be put in Detention in the first place. If a Student performs an action that would put them in Detention while they are already in Detention then one week is added to the total time that they must spend in Detention. If a Student is in Detention for three weeks without interruption then they become a Ghost.

To do: a disincentive to snitching, which at the moment is a bit of a “well, duh” choice. Don’t want Brendan to get bombarded.

(rule 2.6) “If a Student is the subject of a Grudge by every Teacher, then that student is put on Detention.”

Since being the subject of a grudge by every teacher is an action that causes the student to be put in Detention, and the student does it very often, then that student would add up infinite weeks of Detention.

Let’s say I am wrong, and that student will only have one week of detention because “being the subject of a grudge” is not an action. Is he put back in detention as soon as his detention is over? Does that count as an interruption for the purpose of “If a Student is in Detention for three weeks without interruption then they become a Ghost.”?

Is that student put back in Detention as soon as he takes an action that would give a teacher a Grudge against him, is he put back on Detention, or does this do nothing since the teacher already had a Grudge against him?

If a Student is in Detention, and another player gives a Grudge to every teacher against him (“If a Student performs an action that would put them in Detention while they are already in Detention” is not activated), does that add a week to the detention?

It’s not a glossary item, but I would suggest that the common sense definition of “action” would imply that the Student has to actively perform an action that directly leads to their generating further detention. Being the grudge of every teach isn’t an action because it’s not active; it’s a persistent state. Rule 2.6 is ambiguous on this, however, partly because Detention wasn’t a defined term. At present, a student is put on detention when they have a full collection of grudges; is that a persistent state? Does it go away when the grudges shift? If a Student has a full suite of grudges, clears one of the grudges, then gets it back, are they then in Detention twice?

This doesn’t quite solve the ambiguity, but it defines the term and provides a basis upon which to iron out the kinks. I put the EVC rider in because I don’t necessarily think that it’s the ideal mechanic; I do think that it’s a term that needs defining, however.

(Your last question is an unambiguous “yes”, however, as one method of getting Detention does not preclude further methods of getting Detention from also coming into effect.)

imperial if the Headmaster wants the secret PM actions.

“The action that caused” is a bit of a can of worms, though. If I get Snitched into Detention, is it timed from the reaction of the Headmaster, the Disruption comment I chose to post, or the Snitch that you made against me?

against The second paragraph of ‘Snitching’ should specify that it only triggers if the targeted student disrupts the lesson.

for I’m fine with managing Snitchery, but we should put a rule in place to let people out of Detention if they’re in there for reasons other than universal grudge.  Maybe we could make it conditional (“If a Student who Brown Noses is in Detention, but the Teacher of the Lesson does not have a Grudge against that Student, they are released from Detention”).

Purplebeard, I’ve proposed a fix for your issue.
