Proposal: There are no mute spells

In Rule 2.8 Spells replace the text:

All spells have a Difficulty Level in one or more subjects, which may be negative, and an Effect

with

All spells have a Difficulty Level in Explosive Latin (LAT) and one or more other subjects, which may be negative, and an Effect

and replace

After completing a Spell, the Caster must decrement his or her Grade in any Subjects for which that Spell had a Difficulty Level.

with

After completing a Spell, the Caster must decrement his or her Grade in any Subjects except Explosive Latin (LAT) for which that Spell had a Difficulty Level.

Upon enactment of this proposal the Headmaster must open an explosive latin lesson, as soon as it is convenient.
To all spells existing at the time when the proposal is enacted which have no difficulty in LAT, add a difficulty level of -3 in LAT.

This proposal heals the flaws in “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing”, which I like, but is also interesting independent of that one.

against Seems a bit oblique, and a little unintuitive that a Student with terrible Latin skills can get a Dorm-mate to help out, while still remaining the Caster. Simply requiring the Caster to have an E or higher in Explosive Latin, for any spell, might be more straightforward.

And this doesn’t actually fix the raised problem with “A Little Knowledge”, does it? Or did I misunderstand the problem? I thought it was that a Student with Ungraded Latin has no defined Spell Power for LAT, which would still be a problem here.

(Actually, I suppose it’s not that unintuitive - their friend with the Latin skills would be whispering prompts to them. Still seems an unnecessarily oblique way to say “must have an E or higher to cast any spell”, though.)

for I like the “oblique”: I’d like it if casting spells became very varied but ladden with conditions. A simple “must have an E or higher to cast any spell” is just not complicated enough to be an elementary rule to cast magic. =P

Also, the proposal solves part of the problem that some Student are ungraded in Latin by making sure a class is opened soon for them.

I will add that it’s logical that one can’t cast spells until they had at least one class of the language used to cast magic. =P

@Kevan: Ok I thought making LAT compulsory for each spell would prohibit students without LAT from casting any spells. However, i forgot about the helping clause.

Perhaps, we should make really make a grade of E a prerequiste for spellcasting

against If A Little Knowledge… passes, it would create a bit of an odd situation where a student’s LAT is being tested twice.

@Greytyphoon: If casting spells gets really complicated, anyone who doesn’t keep track of all the rules gets limited to playing Nomich and attending classes - with their grades not doing anything. =P
