Proposal: Trouble at Mill

Popular, 5-1. Enacted by JonathanDark.

Adminned at 01 Apr 2025 03:16:22 UTC

In “Mill”, change “As a Daily Action, a Nomicer may spend a Disc” to:-

At any time, a Nomicer may spend a Disc

In “Discs and Jokers”, replace “As a weekly communal action, any Nomicer may set every Nomicer’s Discs to 3.” with:-

As a weekly action, the Imperator may set every Nomicer’s Discs to 3. (This action may not be performed before 7 April 2025. The Imperator may repeal this bracketed text if it is after that date.)

We’re already at the stage of Ais523 performing both of these actions at 23:59 in the hope that others wouldn’t have time to react to them. Maybe we should move towards allowing Discs to be spent freely, and giving the Imperator the bag so that players can’t control when they refresh.

If I wasn’t so tired that night, I honestly would have stayed up and done the exact same thing as ais.

I’m happy to give up the ability, to save me from having to stay up late.  for

OK, so what happened is – I used my computer clock to ensure that the action was performed after midnight, and it’s supposed to be network-synchronized and very accurate.

However, apparently the network synchronization broke at some point, and I didn’t notice, with the clock drifting several seconds fast (and causing the action to occur before midnight, by accident). So thanks to BlogNomic for letting me know my clock is wrong! (I have now fixed it.)

I would rather go the other way – have the Disc refresh happen exactly at midnight automatically, even without a player explicitly performing it. I think I’m going to propose that.

Anyway, this also changes another part of the rule – it makes the Disc spend no longer daily. This is a major change which I think hurts the dynasty substantially, as it means that you can hold all three Disc spends until the end of the week safely.

[ais] To me, if actions can be invalidated by somebody’s clock being a couple of seconds out, that seems like a strong case for getting away from using accurate-to-the-second breakpoints to play a game.

I also think that “hold all three Discs until Sunday, Josh might distribute the new set any time from 00:00:01 Monday onwards” would be much less painful than “optimally Mill at 23:59:59 Sunday, also at 23:59:59 Saturday if you have a Disc spare, also at 23:59:59 Friday if you have a Disc spare”.

@Kevan: this makes the optimal time to mill to be to use all three discs very early on Monday morning, before Josh has an opportunity to do the refresh.

In fact, because Josh is normally asleep on Monday mornings, you can use them all at, say, about 06:00 UTC on Monday morning and probably get in before the refresh happens.
