Call for Judgment: Vermillion

Failed by passage of Cerulean CfJ. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 28 Mar 2021 09:14:49 UTC

Reword the sentence that reads “For each Trick which is active in the game in their Pocket they score the indicated points” in the rule “Tricks” to read

When making a Play, they may claim an amount of Score equal to the sum of Points for all the Tricks their Pocket qualifies for, and which they name in that Play.

Consider this change to be in effect for the Environments of all Active Games.

If the Sixteenth Game is Active, consider Brendan’s first claim of Il Verme in it in to be worth four points for Brendan’s Score in that Game.

The other end of this is “names exactly one Card and an amount of Score claimed for the Play” - this change would require all such scorings to name the Tricks as well, but would split that fact over two different rules?

against I think that you should have to spot your scores and claim them appropriately; I especially think that you didn’t, and shouldn’t be able to retroactively fix your mistake by CfJ.

(By the by, Cribbage also has the policy that you have to spot and claim your scores accurately, and if you don’t, you lose them.)

I appreciate your point, Kevan, but I can’t edit this anymore. I still think splitting the same fact across two rules is better than two rules that outright contradict.

To be clear, I absolutely did SPOT the score, in naming Il Verme—I’m not trying to retcon a non-claim into a claim like “oh yeah, three turns ago I also got this trick.”

I think requiring you to name your scores is a good call. Makes it much easier when playing to be able to be like “okay Josh got 3 points for this play and 2 points for that play” instead of having to be like “okay josh scored Il Toro and L’Aria, I have a traitor up but he’s in Tognoli and Il Toro is on the Tognoli list so I think that’s… 5 points?”

I also think cutting Brendan a bit of slack here is probably fair

what’s the… change here? is this rules change demanding that u have to name a trick to score it? the wording seems to indicate that, but the other comments seem to imply the opposite

[lemonfanta] The most significant change is addressing the contradiction that you both automatically “score the indicated points” when playing a card, while another rule says you must announce “an amount of Score claimed for the Play” and don’t score if you don’t. (We started playing Giolitti as the latter but shifted - imperfectly - to the former.)

This CfJ also requires that you both name a Trick and the Score to it: saying “I play Death and score Il Toro” or “I play Death and score 1” would both be invalid.

If it changes anyone’s mind, the Sixteenth Game is no longer Active.

Unusually, my against on this was principled rather than being purely opportunistic, so I’m going to let it stand.

for if kevan’s summary is right, this seems fine to me. tho i still don’t understand josh’s objection– josh seems to want it to be required that u spot & claim your scores to get them, but that’s exactly what this is doing!
