In the section Names, replace: “new name must be between 4 and 30 characters in length”

with

new name must be between 3 and 30 characters in length

And

Change the name of Nadnavillus to Nad

This would break “When changing their name or joining the game for the first time, a Storyteller’s (or prospective Storyteller’s ) new name must be between 4 and 30 characters in length…” (Although it’s not a technical limitation of the blog software - 4st was able to bypass it by changing their name illegally with nobody noticing, and having it upheld by an ascension.)

Could he just add a change to that as part of this Proposal? Put the core change first to allow 3 to 20 characters, followed by the name change.

Okay, tried to update to align with comments.

imperial I don’t see any problems with it but sounds like there’s some trepidation. I’ll leave it to others.

Checking more closely whether we can actually register new members with three-letter usernames, it turns out that the blog software rejects a short username (“Your username must be at least 4 characters long”.) and only allows an abbreviated screen name, which is a separate field.

So if a new player asks to join the game as “Bob” we have to give them some other user name (making one up, asking them to choose one, or adopting some formal or informal schema for extending short usernames) and then additionally set their screen name to Bob when creating the account. But, I assume, also telling them that they will have to log into the blog as “Bob1”, that logging in as Bob won’t work.

Seems simpler to keep the four-character limit here.

@Kevan

I feel like we can go with something like “When joining the game for the first time, a prospective Storyteller’s name must be between 4 and 30 characters in length, and may only include the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, numbers, underscores, hyphens, full stops and apostrophes. When changing their name, this restriction is reduced to to between 3 and 30 characters” could work fine. I don’t see a reason to hold up Nad’s name change over this.
