I prefer this mechanic to the other one. Diminishing returns, less swingy, and includes testing. Check, Check, Check.

Math could be cleaned up a little though (in terms of explanation, not mechanics, really).

17-32: +5
33-64: +6
65-128: +7
129-256: +8
and so forth.

Although there should probably be some consequences for being found out.
