Proposal: Everybody Hurts

Unpopular - CB

Adminned at 19 Aug 2020 07:31:51 UTC

Add a new rule, called “Health”:-

Health (abbreviated HP) is tracked at the “Mission Log”. Pathfinders have a non-negative integer amount of Health, defaulting to 10.  As a daily action, a Pathfinder in the Cortex Desert Location who has X HP may heal themselves by Y, where Y is an integer between 1 and X + 1 (inclusive), increasing their HP up to a maximum of 10.  A PathFinder whose HP is between 1 and 9 (inclusive) is known to be “injured”.  A PathFinder whose HP is 0 is known to be “badly injured”.

The intention is not to implement a death condition (not fun), but to implement some negative effects for losing (too much) health.

Just saw “Bad Day at Black Rock” was proposed about the same time as this, and would be establishing Stamina as being a Health-like property.  I’m open for feedback, e.g. on whether my proposal is redundant.

I’d add a cost to heal yourself (spend Glarsh? Stamina?) but since HP isn’t invoked for anything yet, it’s not a problem at all yet.

Oh wait this is a daily action. against

I’m not a fan of daily actions at all. Because they’re grindy and suck too much IRL attention.

It’s a daily action, but with an HP-dependent cap on effectiveness and usefulness (designed to further incentivize not having low HP).  The healing progression is such that for the vast majority of cases you won’t have to worry healing more than once or twice;  here’s the healing progression, from any starting HP to the maximum HP, assuming the PathFinder tries to heal for the maximum amount:

10 (no healing)
9 -> 10 (1 healing)
8 -> 10 (1 healing)
7 -> 10 (1 healing)
6 -> 10 (1 healing)
5 -> 10 (1 healing)
4 -> 9 -> 10 (2 healing)
3 -> 7 -> 10 (2 healing)
2 -> 5 -> 10 (2 healing)
1 -> 3 -> 7 -> 10 (3 healing)
0 -> 1 -> 3 -> 7 -> 10 (4 healing)

against I think health is a useful concept, but I also think its most useful if everyone heals together as a communal action.

I also wonder if numbers rather than states are the best way to run things.
