The other option would be to have a something in the rules like: “Items without the Blessed, Cursed, or Uncursed properties are treated as if they had the Uncursed property”.

Functionally that would work, but it still wouldn’t look consistent in the gamestate, as you would wind up with Explorers that had some Items with explicit “Uncursed” text and some without.

They default to Untested, don’t they?

Chiiika said they’d be proposing randomising the statuses of old items as if they had just been picked up, in comments on their Nethacking proposal, which seems fairer to players who didn’t get the early items.

What do items default to right now? Is it “not Blessed, not Uncursed and not Cursed”, because each of those three states is a separate binary flag?

I believe they default to being without properties since the items can have 0 or more. They act like uncursed items, but if you drop them then pick them back up, you have to do a check on them to see what they are.

Incidentally, it looks like the scroll does nothing since “untested” is undefined.
