Hello

I choose to unidle.

Many thousands of minutes ago, I left the game in trolldom and disgrace. I have come to restore my legacy. Welcome me, and tremble.

Proposal: The Devil’s Workshop

Times out and passes 3-1. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 02 Dec 2016 18:04:55 UTC

In “Destruction of the Hours”, replace “one sentence describing a significant or trivial game action that did NOT occur during the dynasty of that Hour” with:-

one sentence naming a Predecessor who idled out during the dynasty of that Hour

Change the Moment of the Eleventh Sun Arc of the First Day to “Paleface idled out”.

Describing imaginary events in the same ways and places as historical ones seems a bit disorientating.

Proposal: Crystal Days

Times out and passes 2-2-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 02 Dec 2016 18:03:37 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Crystal Victory”:-

The number of Settings in a Day are equal to the number of Broken and Lost Hours it has.

If a Player has a number of Quartzes equal to or greater than the number of Settings in a Day, and if that Player is the Guardian of more Hours in that Day than any other Player, then that Player has achieved victory. This is known as a Crystal Victory.

Proposal: The Emperor Has No Watch

Times out and passes 4-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 28 Nov 2016 19:07:04 UTC

Replace the sentence in the rule “The Twelve Arcs” that reads “Each of the one hundred and forty four Hours can be Broken, Focused or Restored.” with

Each of the one hundred and forty four Hours can be Broken, Focused, Restored, or Lost.

Create a new rule called “Destruction of the Hours” as follows:

The Emperor may, as a Daily Action, “destroy an Hour,” which is an Atomic Action with the following steps:

  1. The Emperor decreases their Ticks by one.
  2. The Emperor posts a Story Post identifying a broken Hour, and including one sentence describing a significant or trivial game action that did NOT occur during the dynasty of that Hour.
  3. The Emperor marks the Hour of that dynasty as Lost, marks themselves as its Guardian, and adds the sentence as its Moment.
  4. The Emperor increases each other player’s Quartz by one.

Proposal: Dunking the Madeleine

Times out and passes 4-0. Enacted by Brendan. (No Quartz reverted.)

Adminned at 26 Nov 2016 21:36:05 UTC

If a rule exists called “Remembering Hours”, add a paragraph after the second:-

If a Player has Summoned Memories of an Hour, that Hour cannot be Restored until the most recent Summoned Memories of it are more than 24 Real Hours old. A Player may not Summon Memories on an Hour if there is a Story Post that Focused it which is more than 168 Real Hours old.

Also replace “may—only once per any given Hour—award themselves” with:-

may—only once per any given Hour, and within 24 Real Hours of it becoming Restored—award themselves

If the proposal “The Campaign for Real Time” failed, replace “Real Hours” with “Hours (in the real-world sense)” throughout the rule amended.

If any Players have gained Quartzes from the “Remembering Hours” rule, set those Players’ Quartzes to zero.

Slowing down the quick shuffle that Bucky mentions (and removing any Quartzes gained from it), disallowing Memories on week-old posts (which will have fallen off the front page of the blog), and requiring rewards to be claimed promptly.

Proposal: The Campaign for Real Time

Times out 4 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Nov 2016 16:53:09 UTC

To “The Twelve Arcs”, add:-

All references to “days” and “hours” in the Core Rules and Appendix are considered to refer to periods of time in the real world, rather than those defined by this rule. If a dynastic rule refers to a “Real Day” or “Real Hour”, it refers to a period of time in the real world rather than the Days and Hours of this rule.

Story Post: An Hour on Jupiter

Proposal: Pasts Market

Times out 4 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Nov 2016 09:22:19 UTC

Add a new rule called “Remembering Hours” as follows:

If an Hour has been Focused but not Restored, any Player may Summon Memories of it in the hopes that it will be Restored. Summoning Memories is an Atomic Action, in which the Player pays 1 Quartz via the GNDT, then leaves a comment on the Story Post for the Focused Hour in question that includes the phrase “I remember.” A Player may only Summon Memories of any given Hour once.

Should an Hour for which a Player has Summoned Memories become Restored, that Player may—only once per any given Hour—award themselves 3 Quartz.

Adminned at 23 Nov 2016 14:35:34 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Time Warp Victory”:-

If a group of three Players have a total of at least 48 Quartzes between them, and if two of those Players have nominated the third as that group’s Governor by making a blog post or comment to that effect, then that Governor has achieved victory. This is known as a Time Warp victory.

When a theme is chosen for a new dynasty as a result of a Time Warp victory, it must be the theme of a Restored Hour.

A softer take on Southpointingchariot’s three-person Time Warp victory. (Also doubling the Quartz requirement to 48 since three players can get 8 Quartzes each in four days.)

Proposal: Ambiguously Committed

Times out 5-0. Enacted by Brendan, replacing two instances of this text.

Adminned at 23 Nov 2016 00:00:23 UTC

In Rule 2.4, change the text:

the Player taking this action may award themselves 1 Quartz.

to

the Player taking this action may award themselves 1 Quartz. If no Quartz is awarded in this step, they must make a GNDT comment of “Done focusing”.

An Atomic Action occurs when its last step is taken.  But if the last step consists entirely of optional actions, there’s a period of time where it’s not clear to anyone not taking the action whether it is completed yet.

Proposal: A day of morning

Timed out 2 votes to 2, with 1 unresolved DEF. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 22 Nov 2016 16:14:56 UTC

Add a new Dynastic Rule to the ruleset.  Call it “Repose” and give it the following text:

When there are twenty-four Restored hours among the days’ first six Sun hours, Blognomic enters Hiatus.  The Hiatus lasts 24 hours and then ends, at which point this rule is repealed.

In the rule “Escapement”, change the text “November 11th” to “November 12th”

Proposal: Cuckoo

Times out and passes, 6-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 20 Nov 2016 21:17:17 UTC

If the proposal “Predisposal” failed, this proposal has no further effect.

To the second paragraph of “The Twelve Arcs”, add:-

Each Hour may have a Predecessor as its Guardian: this is tracked on the wiki page by describing the Hour as “Broken by X” (or Focused or Restored by X), where X is the Guardian’s name.

In “Restoration of the Hours”, replace “The Player marks the Hour of that dynasty as Focused, and adds the sentence as its Moment.” with:-

The Player marks the Hour of that dynasty as Focused, marks themselves as its Guardian, and adds the sentence as its Moment.

For each Hour which is Focused or Restored, set its Guardian to be the Player who Focused it.

Plain reproposal of Clocks Are Like People, now that “may not name themself” is on its way out.

Proposal: Predisposal

Timed out 3 votes to 1 with 1 unresolved DEF. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 Nov 2016 15:49:18 UTC

Remove the text “A player may not name themself as a Predecessor.” from the ruleset.

In “Restoration of the Hours”, replace “If the Sentence named only a single Predecessor, and that Predecessor is named in the Moments of no other Hours, the Player taking this action may award themselves 1 Quartz.” with:-

If the Sentence named only a single Predecessor, and that Predecessor is named in the Moments of no other Hours, and that Predecessor is not the Player taking this action, then the Player taking this action may award themselves 1 Quartz.

The clause that “A Predecessors like None Other” enacted turns out to be a bit broad, affecting any other usage of “Predecessor” that might refer to the player doing the referring. This changes it to affect the only rule it was presumably meant to affect - gaining Quartzes for naming yourself in a Moment.

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Keeping tabs on who Focused each Hour, so that we can do something with that (perhaps moving towards rewarding players for successfully awakening Predecessors).

Proposal: It’s Just a Jump to the Left…

Timed out 1 vote to 1 with 1 unresolved DEF. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 17 Nov 2016 23:51:24 UTC

Create a new rule “Time Warps” as follows:

Any player may, as a daily action, “create a Time Warp,” by making a Story Post that specifies:
1. The name(s) of at least one other active player designated as Collaborator(s). The post’s author and the designated player(s) are the Collaborators of that Warp.
2. The name of one of the collaborators designated as the Warper.
3. A restored Hour that was focused by one of the Collaborators designated as the Target. The Fourth Dynasty of Josh may not be Targeted.

If each of the named players comment on the post with a FOR vote, then the Time Warp becomes Open.

When the quartzes of any Open Warp’s collaborators total at least 24, that Warp Activates and all Time Warps become permanently Closed. The Emperor must then pass the role of Emperor to the Active Warp’s Warper, and the Dynastic Rules are set to those of the Active Warp’s Target’s dynasty after that dynasty’s first proposal was enacted.

This is my attempt to create a goal that fit with the ideals of the dynasty: collaboration against the Emperor, nostalgia, use of the archives, bringing people in, and embracing unintuive situations and radical change.

I’ve tried to structure things so that new players that are recruited via vouching are not discouraged to join in, because as long as you have at least 1 quartz, you’re valuable to a collaboration. At the same time, there’s no benefit to hesitating to get involved, so it avoids a waiting game.

Add a new Dynastic Rule to the ruleset.  Call it “The Bell Tolls” and give it the following text:

In “Restoration of the Hours”, add a fifth bullet point:

  • If the chosen Hour is the only Focused Hour in that Day, or if the Chosen Hour is directly before or after a Restored Hour, then the Player taking this action may award themselves 1 Quartz.

Arbitrarily reducing the search space.

So that:
1) Idling Players don’t cease to be Vouched For
2) A Predecessor can Vouch For themselves by making any comment on e.g. the Story Post for focusing that hour.

In “Restoration of the Hours”, replace “The player reduces their Ticks by one.” with:-

The player increases their Ticks by one.

And replace “then any Player may change that Hour from Focused to Restored” with:-

then any Player may change that Hour from Focused to Restored and increase the Emperor’s Ticks by one

Set the Emperor’s Ticks to 48.

Trying this the other way around, to remove the need for a refill mechanic: Ticks go up when we Focus Hours, and the Emperor’s red line goes up when we Restore them. If we have too many Focused Hours on the board at once, it’s game over. (144 is too wide a gap to be a challenge in this context, so this would reduce it by two thirds.)

Proposal: Time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking…

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 10 Nov 2016 08:54:35 UTC

Enact a new rule entitled “Time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking…” with the following text:

As a Daily Communal Action and Atomic Action a player should increase the Ticks of all players other than the Emperor by one and decrease the Emperor’s Ticks by the total number of players other than the Emperor. If the Emperor’s Ticks would become negative by this action, the whole action is considered invalid and cannot take place.

Also, on enactment, distribute one Tick from the Emperor to each player with zero Ticks.

Not the most inventive way to redistribute Ticks, but it’s a start to keep the game from stalling.

Proposal: When did I do that?

Reaches quorum and passes 5-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 09 Nov 2016 20:29:16 UTC

Append the following text to the Rule “Atomic Actions”:

For the purposes of determining the ordering or legality of game actions the time of an Atomic Action shall be the time that it is completed.

Avoid potential CfJ’s before it happens. The main thing is to have a standard. This is the one that makes the most sense to me.

Story Post: Restoring an Hour

Story Post: Let the twelfth moon arc of the fourth day be restored

The Second Dynasty of coppro began with a rant by ais523, then CallForJudgement, which led to a reform of the timing rules for daily actions to reduce timing scams and grinding.

The Rules say that I must describe “a significant or trivial game action”. As far as I am aware the Rules do not define, either now or at the time in question, whether a rant qualifies as a game action. In either case I have also referenced a proposal.

Also, ignore the GNDT comment… I wrote the wrong Hour by one.

Proposal: Absent Friends

Times out 3-1. Enacted by Brendan.

Then add to that rule:-

If an Hour is Focused and all Predecessors described in its Moment are Vouched For, then any Player may change that Hour from Focused to Restored. (A Predecessor is any human who has ever played BlogNomic. A Predecessor is Vouched For if they are a Player, or if they have posted a public message anywhere on the internet during the current dynasty which contains the word “BlogNomic”.)

If the current date is December 12th, 2016, or later, the Emperor may and should comment “The Pendulum Swings: DICE144” in the GNDT as a Daily Action. If the result of that die roll is higher than the number of Hours which are Restored, then the Emperor may and should delete all rules in the Ruleset except “Ruleset and Gamestate” and replace its text with the following text, run through a rot13 transformation:

Guvf vf gur Ehyrfrg sbe OybtAbzvp, juvpu tbireaf gur Tnzrfgngr bs OybtAbzvp. Arvgure znl or nygrerq. Gurer ner ab Cynlref. OybtAbzvp unf raqrq.

Proposal: The Fun and the Prizes

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 07 Nov 2016 15:20:11 UTC

In the rule “The Twelve Arcs”, replace “Each Hour corresponds to the dynasty of the same number as recorded on the ‘Main Page’ of the wiki. ” with:-

Each Hour corresponds to a dynasty, tracked by having the Hour’s name on the State of the Arcs wiki page link to that dynasty’s wiki page. Each Hour may also describe a Moment.

During this proposal’s enactment, each Hour is considered to be numbered consecutively from 1, in the order that they appear this version of the State of the Arcs wiki page. For each Hour, make it correspond to the dynasty with the same number in the Dynastic History section of this version of the wiki main page. (eg. “First Sun Arc: Broken”).

In “Restoration of the Hours”, if it exists, replace the second and third bullet points with:-

2. The player posts a Story Post identifying a broken Hour, and including one sentence describing a significant or trivial game action that occurred during the dynasty of that Hour. Such a sentence should include a link to a blog post or wiki edit where that action occurred, if relevant.

3. The player marks the Hour of that dynasty as Restored, and adds the sentence as its Moment.

Clarifying how the Hours are numbered, removing the need for a rule to refer to the Main Page (which, per the glossary, makes it gamestate and locks it), and doing something a bit more thematic than just describing dynasties, which the Main Page already does.

Proposal: A little bit of self-destruction doesn’t hurt

Timed out 1 vote to 3. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 07 Nov 2016 15:11:53 UTC

Enact a dynastic rule “Modification of Fair Play Rules” with the following text:

In the Core Rule “Fair Play” the rule “A Player should not do any action meant to make the game unplayable (for example, changing multiple keywords to the same word in an ascension address).” should be instead read as “A Player should not change multiple keywords to the same word in an ascension address.”

Arguably, Brendan’s proposal “Twelve Times Twelve Midnight” and even Kevan’s vote FOR it are “actions meant to make the game unplayable”. By adding this, we allow to further develop this dynasty, but (given that we save the nomic) do not risk making the game unplayable next dynasties (as if we changed the core rule) because this rule will be repealed on ascension. Also, “A Dynastic Rule has precedence over a Core Rule, unless that Core Rule explicitly says it can’t be overruled by a Dynastic Rule”, which Fair Play doesn’t state.

Proposal: Restoration of the Hours

Timed out / quorumed 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 07 Nov 2016 15:11:28 UTC

If the rules “The Twelve Arcs” and “Escapement” exist, then amend the rule “The Twelve Arcs” by adding the following text after “Each of the one hundred and forty four Hours can be Broken or Restored.”:

The initial state of all Hours is Broken.

Each Hour corresponds to the dynasty of the same number as recorded on the ‘Main Page’ of the wiki. One may speak of the Hour of a particular dynasty or the dynasty of a particular Hour with the obvious meaning.

and enacting a new rule “Restoration of the Hours” with the following text

Any player with non-zero Ticks may, as a daily action, “restore an Hour,” which is an Atomic Action with the following steps:

1. The player reduces their Ticks by one.
2. The player posts a Story Post containing at least the number and name of a dynasty whose Hour is broken and one sentence describing that dynasty.
3. The player marks the Hour of that dynasty as Restored.

The idea is to more explicitly link the hours to past dynasties, and to enable players to spend some resource to restore the hours. To do so, the players must also recall something about the dynasty beyond just its name and number. At the moment this is just treated as flavour text.

Proposal: Repent, Harlequin

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 05 Nov 2016 16:56:14 UTC

Enact a subrule to “Escapement”, called “Timekeeper”:-

One Player (or idle Player) may be the Timekeeper, and their identity is tracked privately by the Emperor. The Timekeeper cannot declare victory unless Time is Up. The Timekeeper should conceal the fact that they are the Timekeeper and lie about it if asked.

If there is no Timekeeper, then the Emperor may select any Player (or idle Player) other than themselves to be the Timekeeper, and inform them of this fact. The Emperor should only select an idle Player in this way if they have good reason to believe that Player will unidle during the dynasty.

If the rule exists called “Escapement” and it has a paragraph beginning “If the total Ticks among all Players”, delete that paragraph. Then, if a rule exists called “Escapement”, add the following paragraph to it:-

If the total Ticks among all Players other than the Emperor is greater than the Emperor’s Ticks, and the current date is after November 11th 2016, then: Time is Up, and the Timekeeper has achieved victory.

To discourage the no-score draw of a Metadynasty (a player in second place may be able to force a Metadynasty rather than let the player ahead of them win, if they have no other option), and to encourage some paranoia.

Create a new rule called “Doomsday Clock” as follows:

If the current date is December 1st, 2016, or later, the Emperor may and should delete all rules in the Ruleset except “Ruleset and Gamestate” and replace its text with the following text, run through a rot13 transformation:

Guvf vf gur Ehyrfrg sbe OybtAbzvp, juvpu tbireaf gur Tnzrfgngr bs OybtAbzvp. Arvgure znl or nygrerq. Gurer ner ab Cynlref. OybtAbzvp unf raqrq.

Translated: “This is the Ruleset for BlogNomic, which governs the Gamestate of BlogNomic. Neither may be altered. There are no Players. BlogNomic has ended.”

Ascension Address: The Last Dynasty

Twelve times twelve emperors have held the nomic throne, and with each exchange of power, their sun wanes further. Surviving players are few, and weakened; the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity. There is a sense of sapping, crumbling. An inkling that the life of the empire ebbs.

Deep in the grinding heart of time, teeth mesh; an escapement cracks; a tick like a bomb echoes through long halls of abandoned names. There is a brief lull, an anacrusis, before the great bell begins to sound its final warning:

The hour come round at last.

Repeal all Dynastic Rules except “Atomic Actions.” Replace “Mayor” with “Emperor” and “Councillor” with “Player” throughout the Ruleset.

Dynastic Wrap-Up

I’ll post an Ascension Address tomorrow, after I think through my current idea. Meanwhile here’s a comment space for anyone who wants to talk about afterthoughts for this Dynasty, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Quincunx and I established our coin-toss alliance a couple weeks ago; where there any other explicit ones in play?

Declaration of Victory: Gerrymander Rampant

Has been open for voting for at least 12 hours, has a number of FOR Votes that equal Quorum (3-0 with 1 possibly unresolved DEF), and the Mayor has Voted FOR it. Enacted by Brendan.

The Charm Party is in Government. I am part of it, and have more Will than any other Councillor. I have achieved victory.

Wednesday the 2nd Election

The ballots have been counted.

  • Grapnel West: 11 Charm, 1 neutral
  • Grapnel East: 6 Down, 2 Charm, 1 Strange
  • Northill: 5 Down, 4 Up
  • Brucetown: 8 Down, 2 Up
  • Anchorage: 7 Down, 3 Charm, 2 Strange
  • Fluke Hill: 7 Charm, 2 Down
  • Herreshoff: 4 Charm, 3 Down, 1 Up
  • The Bowery: 10 Charm, 1 neutral
  • Killick: 9 Charm
  • Danforth: 5 Down, 3 Strange

No Party is supported by more Constituencies than every other Party, so the Charm Government remains in power.

Brendan and Quincunx, who are part of the Charm Party, gain 1 Will each.

Premature election post

Whoops, hit the button early.
