Proposal: Different Class

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Aug 2014 04:04:34 UTC

In the rule “Evening Classes”, replace “and reducing their own profit by £5” with:-

if they have not already taken any Evening Classes during the current dynasty

Maybe this is more interesting; everybody gets one free Evening Class, if they want it, and there’s no way of knowing that somebody has taken one.

Proposal: An informational resource

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Aug 2014 01:55:43 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Answering Questions”:-

The Broker is allowed to answer questions received on the blog by replying on the blog itself. This is done at the broker’s discretion.

A much tamer version of my other proposal, “Curiosity kills the cat”.

Proposal: Limited inhibitions

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Aug 2014 01:55:21 UTC

Change the cost of Evening Classes to £3

Too much opportunity to waste.

Proposal: The Ghost of a Flea

Times out 6 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Aug 2014 01:46:44 UTC

In the rule “Flea Market”, replace “any Seller may announce that that post is now closed” with:-

any Seller or the Broker may announce that that post is now closed

There are some old Flea Market posts floating around, which could still be claimed (and reduce buyers’ Profits) weeks later. If players are reluctant to close other people’s posts in case it’s taken as an act of aggression, perhaps the Broker should be able to do it as well.

Proposal: Spam Brigade

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 31 Jul 2014 08:55:13 UTC

In the rule named “Special Delivery”, change"from those who have submitted at least one Proposal during the past week” to:

from those who have submitted at least one Proposal during the past week that has not been Vetoed.

Proposal: Curiosity kills the cat

Fails with 2 votes to 5, fewer than a quorum of Sellers not voting AGAINST. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jul 2014 10:40:52 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Asking questions”:-

Any seller may Ask A Question to the Broker by sending him a Private Message with “Ask A Question” as the Subject, and their question(s), in 140 characters or less as the message, and then reducing their profit by 12. Nothing other than what is specified in this rule can be included in the message. Then, for each question that the Broker was able to understand from the message, the Broker must give a true and complete response.

Let’s just say I’m bursting with questions…

Proposal: A Keener Eye

Failed 1 vote to 5, with less than a quorum of Sellers not voting against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jul 2014 02:23:21 UTC

If the Proposal titled “A Keen Eye” failed, this Proposal does nothing. Otherwise, adapt the last sentence of the rule “Evening Classes” to read as follows

After receiving such a message, the Broker should privately respond to the Seller with a list of the eight Rare numbers and four Forgery numbers previously selected for the specified Category.

Let’s keep the same 8 and 4, whoever knows them.

Proposal: Unwanted Gifts

Reached quorum 5 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jul 2014 02:21:58 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Special Delivery”:-

As a weekly action, the Broker may select a random Seller from those who have submitted at least one Proposal during the past week. Upon doing so, the Broker shall select a Category at random, and award the selected Seller with a Good which belongs to that Category, and to a random Subcategory of that Category, with a random Significance from 1 to 99, and a name of his choosing.

Why are there so few proposals?

Proposal: A Keen Eye

Reached quorum 8 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jul 2014 02:20:13 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Evening Classes”:-

A Seller may take Evening Classes in a specific Category of Good by sending the Broker a private message to this effect, and reducing their own profit by £5. After receiving such a message, the Broker should privately respond to the Seller with a list of eight Rare numbers and four Forgery numbers for the specified Category (selected at random by means of the Broker’s choice).

Flea Market: Padlock

A very shiny padlock. Any offers? (19.23.37)

Pretty shiny, I guess.

Hello again

Can I unidle? Thanks.

Flea Market: Brave Little Toaster

A unique item with a colourful history; in great condition, considering its age. (19.1.61)

Collector: Home, Furniture & DIY

A man with a desperate look in his eye and a half-finished, over-budget barn conversion on the edge of town is offering a 50% bonus for any home, furniture and DIY items brought to the flea market this week.

Friday, July 25, 2014

Collector: Toys & Games

I have been contacted by an anonymous collector with a great interest in toys and games, from any era. Broker Offers accepted on items in this category before the end of Sunday may claim a bonus 50%.

Proposal: Collect Call

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Jul 2014 02:20:51 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Collectors”:-

As a weekly action, the Broker may make a blog post announcing that a private Collector is seeking a particular Category of Good; this Category shall be selected at random by the Broker. If such a post is made, then any Seller accepting an Offer from the Broker for a Good belonging to that Category, during the remainder of that week, may claim an additional bonus Profit equal to 50% of that Offer.

Proposal: Credit Limit

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Jul 2014 02:19:53 UTC

After “The Broker or any Seller may respond to a Flea Market post specifying an Offer in Pounds that he is willing to give for the Good.” in the rule “Flea Market”, add:-

A Seller’s Offer may not be more than £50 higher than their Profit, at the time the Offer is made.

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Proposal: Death of the Offer

Reached quorum 4 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan. Note that the ARPANET Interface Message Processor is now arguably lost in limbo as its buyer did not claim it before this rule enacted.

Adminned at 24 Jul 2014 04:32:37 UTC

To the rule “Flea Market”, replace “If the Offer was not made by the Broker, then the Seller who made the Offer must then reduce their own profit by the number of Pounds equal to the Offer, to gain the relevant Good into their possession.” with:-

If the Offer was not made by the Broker, then the Seller who made the post must then reduce the profit of whoever made the Offer by a number of Pounds equal to the Offer, and add the relevant Good into the Offer-maker’s possession.

And add a new paragraph:-

A Flea Market post becomes closed immediately after an Offer within it is accepted. If no Offers have been made to a Flea Market post in the previous 48 hours, and if the post is more than 48 hours old, then any Seller may announce that that post is now closed, in a comment to that post. When a Flea Market post becomes closed, it is no longer considered to be a Flea Market post.

Fixing the problem that a Seller “must then” pay for and gain a Good, even if they are asleep at the time, and adding a time-out for unwanted goods.

Proposal: Because You’re Such a Good Customer

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 23 Jul 2014 06:49:44 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Still My Final Offer” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

To the second paragraph of “Flea Market”, replace the sentence beginning “Once the Broker has calculated an Offer…” with the following:

Once the Broker has calculated an Offer for a Good, he will use the same Offer if the same Seller takes the same Good (or another Good with the same Name, Category, Subcategory and Significance as it) to the Flea Market at a later point.

This gives people a reason to trade goods with one another. Just because the Broker’s made a low offer doesn’t mean that you couldn’t get a higher one… if you’re willing to run the risk of buying a Forgery.

Flea Market: Memorabilia

It’s…a…memorabilia…(10.21.49)

I couldn’t think of anything else to call it

Flea Market: ARPANET Interface Message Processor (11,18,74)

This is one of the original packet-switching nodes used to connect networks to the ARPANET (the forerunner of the Internet) from the late 1960s to 1989. A venerable piece of Internet history. One previous owner.

Category 11 Computers/Tablets & Networking (typical price £22), Subcategory 18 Other Computing & Networking, Significance 74. Any takers?

Proposal: Still My Final Offer

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 23 Jul 2014 06:47:39 UTC

To the second paragraph of “Flea Market”, add:-

Once the Broker has calculated an Offer for a Good, he will use the same Offer if the same Good (or another Good with the same Name, Category, Subcategory and Significance as it) is taken to the Flea Market at a later point.

This change was wiped out when PvP Haggling enacted.

Proposal: Dine and Dash

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 22 Jul 2014 13:13:31 UTC

If the proposal “PvP Haggling” is not passed, this proposal has no effect.
Otherwise, change “If the Offer was not made by the Broker, then the Seller who made the Offer may then reduce their own profit” to read “If the Offer was not made by the Broker, then the Seller who made the Offer must then reduce their own profit”

The fix necessary

Proposal: You and what Money?

Failed 5 votes to 1. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 22 Jul 2014 13:14:16 UTC

If the proposal “PvP Haggling” is not passed, this proposal has no effect.
Otherwise, modify “The Broker or any Seller may respond to a Flea Market post specifying an Offer in Pounds that he is willing to give for the Good.” to read “The Broker or any Seller with a positive Profit may respond to a Flea Market post specifying an Offer in Pounds up to and including their current Profit that they are willing to give for the Good.”

Grammars, and making it so you can’t go broker than broke. Remember when we used e to represent the arbitrary gender pronoun?

Flea Market: Big ol Crate

Might be handy to store other goods in? It looks like you’re going to be dealing with an influx of goods. 19.25.71, for reference, which puts its Typical Price at $9.

Proposal: PvP Haggling

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 22 Jul 2014 02:27:48 UTC

In Rule 2.4, Replace the paragraph beginning “The Broker may respond…” with:

The Broker or any Seller may respond to a Flea Market post specifying an Offer in Pounds that he is willing to give for the Good. Offers made by the Broker are equal to the Market Price of the Good divided by 100, then multiplied by a random number between 25 and 175 (generated without using the GNDT, and rounding down), then reduced by 5 (to a minimum of zero).

Replace the paragraph beginning “Within 24 hours…” with:

Within 24 hours of an Offer being posted on an Flea Market post, the Seller who made the post may Accept the Offer in a comment to the Flea Market post, then may remove the relevant Good from their possession to gain a number of Pounds equal to the Offer. If the Offer was not made by the Broker, then the Seller who made the Offer may then reduce their own profit by the number of Pounds equal to the Offer, to gain the relevant Good into their possession. No more than one Offer can be Accepted for any one Flea Market post.

Let’s give Sellers the ability to buy and sell goods from one another.

Flea Market: Bassett-Lowke 0-gauge Flying Scotsman in original box

The Flying Scotsman, the most famous steam train in the world. This 0-gauge 20-inch model train is a collectors’ item, with only 350 in existence. 12-14 volts DC motor with custom revised gear; suitable for 2 and 3 rail operation (switch located in the cab). Category 10, Subcategory 42, Significance 96. What am I bid?

Proposal: My Final Offer

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 22 Jul 2014 02:26:49 UTC

To the second paragraph of “Flea Market”, add:-

Once an Offer has been made for a Good, if the same Good (or another Good with the same Name, Category, Subcategory and Significance as it) is taken to the Flea Market, it will receive the same Offer instead of an Offer being randomly generated.

If any Offers were accepted which differed from earlier duplicate Offers on the same Goods (or other Goods with the same Name, Category, Subcategory and Significance), the Pounds gained from accepting each such Offer shall be deducted from its Seller’s Profit.

Discouraging people from bringing the same item back a few times to try to get a better offer (or sound out the chances of it being Rare or Forged). The maths of the ideal selling point under that system is a bit interesting, but the spam isn’t.

Proposal: Unwanted Gold

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 21 Jul 2014 01:20:38 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Flea Market”:-

A Seller may take a Good to the Flea Market by reducing their own profit by £2 and posting a blog entry with the title “Flea Market:” followed by the name of the Good, or a string similar to its name. This is known as a Flea Market post. A Seller may not make a Flea Market post if they already have one to which the Broker has not responded.

The Broker may respond to a Flea Market post specifying an Offer in Pounds that he is willing to give for the Good. This is equal to the Market Price of the Good divided by 100, then multiplied by a random number between 25 and 175 (generated without using the GNDT, and rounding down), then reduced by 5 (to a minimum of zero).

Within 24 hours of an Offer being posted on an Flea Market post, the Seller who made the post may remove the relevant Good from their possession to gain a number of Pounds equal to the Offer.

Innacuracies

I think the Typical Prices of the categories 16, 18, and 19 on the Second-hand goods page are wrong. They are listed as $15, $22, and $27, respectively, when 250/20, 250/9, and 250/27 come out to $12, $27, and $9, respectively. Anything I missed?

Add a new rule, “Winning” that reads as follows:

A Seller achieves victory upon gaining 3 or more Rare Goods, and no Forgeries. The Seller is to be notified by the Broker of the Seller’s fulfillment of the victory conditions, and is then afforded the opportunity to create a Declaration of Victory

I prefer getting a win condition in early which can be tweaked as we go along. Arrow if you get the reference!

Proposal: A Man Who Knows the Price of Everything

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 18 Jul 2014 23:48:40 UTC

Add a subrule to “Second-Hand Goods” called “Market Price”:-

The Market Price of a Good is equal to the Typical Price of that Good’s Category on the “Second-Hand Goods” wiki page, multiplied by the Good’s Quality.

Each Category may have ten different numbers between 1 and 99 which indicate Rare objects within that Category and five different numbers in the same range which indicate Forgeries; these are tracked privately by the Broker. For a given Category, a single number may not indicate both a Rare and a Forgery. If a Good’s Significance equals one of its Category’s Rare numbers, that Good’s Quality is 2; if it equals one of the Category’s Forgery numbers, its Quality is zero; otherwise its Quality is 1.

The Broker may randomly generate Rare and Forgery numbers for all Categories at any time, using any means he wishes. Upon doing so, he must remove this paragraph from the ruleset.

To the second paragraph of “Second-Hand Goods”, add:-

The Typical Price of each Category is listed in brackets after its name.

In the wiki page “Second-Hand Goods”, give each Category a Typical Price equal to £250 divided by the number of items in that Category, rounding each Typical Price down to the nearest whole number.

Giving items intrinsic prices, with 10% in each category being secretly twice as valuable and 5% secretly worthless. These are initially only known by the Broker, but could be something that Sellers can privately learn for themselves…

Reword the rule “Profit” to the following:

Each Seller has an amount of Profit, tracked in the GNDT. Profit is measured in Pounds, may be negative, and defaults to zero. Pounds may be denoted by the symbols £ and $, interchangeably.

This ought to be worded a way that could make it work. Now people on both sides of the pond can easily type the symbol when necessary.

Proposal: I’m Feeling Unlucky

In Rule 2.1 “Second-hand Goods”, replace “If a Seller has fewer than four Goods, they may Search their Attic announcing a Category, and rolling DICE50 and DICE99, all in the same GNDT comment” with

If a Seller has fewer than four Goods, they may - as a daily action - Search their Attic announcing a Category, and rolling DICE50 and DICE99, all in the same GNDT comment

In my opinion, this gives rises to many more opportunities than if Searching wasn’t a daily action. (also, Google reference)

In rule 3.1 “Keywords”, amend the definition of “Week” so as to read the following:

References to a week as an entity rather than as a duration (e.g. “At the beginning of each week”, or “already happened this week”), unless otherwise stated, refer to a period of time beginning at and including 00:00:00 UTC on a Monday and ending when the next week begins.

Adds consistency between Week and Day definitions, and prevents ambiguity as to what the “beginning” of a Monday or “ending” of a Sunday is (I personally would usually dictate those times by when I wake up and go to sleep, so 8am PST on a monday is the “start” of the week.

Proposal: Loft and Found

Adminned at 17 Jul 2014 15:59:48 UTC

If “Opportunity Cost Knocks” enacted, replace “When a Seller gains a Good in this way” with “When a Seller Searches their Attic” in the ruleset.

Each Seller then loses £5 for each time they Searched their Attic and did not gain a Good as a result, since the time at which “Opportunity Cost Knocks” enacted.

Moving the cost to the search instead of the finding, so that you can’t just search for the rarest things fifty times until you find one. With a cautionary fine for anyone who tries to exploit the loophole before we fix it.

Proposal: Opportunity Cost Knocks

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 17 Jul 2014 00:48:44 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Profit”:-

Each Seller has an amount of Profit, tracked in the GNDT. Profit is measured in Pounds (£), may be negative, and defaults to zero.

If “Attic Scavengers” enacted, replace “If a Seller has no Goods, they may - as a daily action - Search their Attic by announcing a Category, and rolling DICE50 and DICE99, all in the same GNDT comment” with:-

If a Seller has fewer than four Goods, they may Search their Attic announcing a Category, and rolling DICE50 and DICE99, all in the same GNDT comment

And add to the end of that paragraph:-

When a Seller gains a Good in this way, they must reduce their Profit by £5.

Adding money, and changing the daily action to a free one with a monetary cost. Time is money.

Proposal: Attic Scavengers

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jul 2014 14:06:36 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Second-Hand Goods”:-

Each Seller owns zero or more Goods, tracked as a text list in the GNDT. A Good has a name (a text string) and an ID (three numbers separated by full stops, known as the Good’s Category, Subcategory and Significance), and is written in the GNDT as “Name (#.#.#)”. By default, a Seller has no Goods.

The wiki page Second-hand goods lists the possible Categories and Subcategories of Goods, and their numbers.

If a Seller has no Goods, they may - as a daily action - Search their Attic by announcing a Category, and rolling DICE50 and DICE99, all in the same GNDT comment: if the chosen Category has a Subcategory corresponding to the first die roll, then the Seller gains a Good with a name of their own choosing and an ID equal to “A/B/C”, where A is the number of the chosen Category, B is the result of the first die roll and C is the result of the second die roll.

If the wiki page “Second-hand goods” has changed since its creation, revert it to its original version.

Ascension Address: Attic Attack

A dented tin whistle, a candlestick with some kind of guild symbol, some sharp but tarnished antique cutlery, a mouldering opera cloak… You aren’t sure how your attic has filled up with this junk over the years, but the time has come to clear it out and see how much money you can get for it.

Append to the rule named “Points”:

If an Assassin has 9 or more Points and no other Assassin has more points than them, that Assassin has achieved victory.

You’ll note that Kevan has 9 Points, having found and killed two of his Targets. With so few active Assassins moving around on a massive board, it’ll take forever for someone to overtake him, so we may as well call this now and get a fresh new dynasty going.

Idlings

Larrytheturtle, rainbowkitten408, Skju and TheChosenOne have not made a post or comment in the last seven days and are therefore rendered idle. New Targets will be issued shortly where appropriate. Quorum drops to 3.

In “Street and Urchin Actions”, replace “Pick Up Gadget” with:-

Pick Up Gadget (specifying a Desired Gadget, and optionally an Unwanted Gadget): If an Unwanted Gadget is specified and the Assassin is carrying it, that Assassin loses that Gadget. Then, if the Assassin is in a Building, if the Desired Gadget is Available in that Building, and if the Assasssin is carrying fewer than two Gadgets, then the Assassin gains the Desired Gadget.

Append to the rule named “Position”:

When a Location Explodes, all Buildings in that Location are removed and the Location is marked with the string ‘XXX’. Any action that would place an Assassin in a Location that has Exploded instead does nothing.

Append to the list of Street Actions in the rule named “Street and Urchin Actions”:

Bomb (specifying a Location): If the acting Assassin is carrying a Bomb and their Position is adjacent or equal to the specified Location, every Assassin in the specified Location is Killed by the acting Assassin, the specified Location Explodes and the acting Assassin loses their Bomb.
